well guys looks like i'll be finding a new home....

:( Bummer.....

I graduated from KSU (non aviation program) awhile back. I sit on the local airport commission here at home and we have been trying to get the KSU aviation program to move it to our local KSU Regional Campus. The airport (PHD) is about 1 mile from the campus and would be a perfect fit.

Alas, we have not heard anything from either the Dean of KSU or the head of the program. Sorry, but I will keep trying.

I can't believe Kent State would just close down the airport like that. Are they going to build a new one before they close the
1G3? Since it said they were closing it, because expansion was not possible. I do not think Kent needs a bigger airport, it has served the area well in its current form for a # of years.

I heard it was something about a developer wanting the land for a new project. Any truth to that, or was that another school (I forget the name, I just remembered it was a school that owned it's own airport)?

yeah something like that...

Surprisingly (or maybe not), AOPA didn't really do JACK for this airport. I instructed for the flight school thats also located at 1G3 for awhile. Last summer, the owner had me diligently working on all sorts of activity reports and such to help him in his fight to keep the airport open. Guess my efforts were for nothing. Sad to see the airport go. I flew several hundred hours out of there.

I may be mistaken since I read the article rather quickly but where in the article did it say that this will "effect" and/or put a halt to the KSU aviation program? It is my undertanding that they are simply closing one airport since they are unable to expand it and moving the program to a nearby airport. This seems pretty practical and from this perspective it surely does not look like a "sad day" or the end to this aviation program.

However, major expansion to the current airport is impossible because of the growth of the cities surrounding it.

This move does not look like a knee /jerk reaction on behalf of the board and faculty at KSU, most likely this will or should have little effect on the program since there are many other airports in the area.

it's not going to really hurt the program, in fact i think they mentioned in the article that it should help us some...money is tight and that's the main reason for the move to 29G (i believe that is where we will end up) i don't believe in my 1.5 years that i have left that i'll ever see the move...maybe as a CFI but not a student...

and as 350driver said, it never mentions anything about this stopping or halting the program, i think it will continue to be a good school...but as EatSleepFly mentioned, i too have logged a few hundred hours there and the memories are what you miss...it is a nice facility and i hate to see it closed...

and as for the people living near the field that constantly gripe about the nosie, it just gives me more of a reason to come anoy them...:D...hell if there is no airport there then there are no noise abatement procedure either...:D

I recommend the following
1. Prop: TOPPED
2. Power: FULL
3. Flaps: FULL
4. Gear: DOWN

Now feel free to circle @ 1001 AGL. Low slow and dirty!

I can't stand people who move next to an airport then say it's too loud. People like that nearly closed down my little league when I was 10, and made thigns complicated at my old airport (Like not wanting historic planes to fly in because they were too loud)...

You forgot to take a multi and have one prop turn about 200 or 300 RPM less than the other.

Just a thought.

good call...

Not to say that isn't a good idea and all, but Jmmccutc is a college student and therefore has little money, (or the appropriate rating) to go buzzing around in the $200 per hour Seminole. You could better show your displeasure by getting drunk (and we all know that won't be a problem):D, and then go visit Carol's front lawn and relieve yourself. This tactic was performed with great success back a few years ago when she cancelled the hockey program.
In all seriousness though, Carol Cartwright has always wanted to kill off the aviation program. The fact of the mater is that KSU wants to grow by up to 50% in the next 10 years, and to do so they need money. I was told that the golf course (Rose's Run??) wants to expand and build some luxury homes course side and the airport is just the perfect location to do it. Besides this may work out good for you Jmmccutc........you won't have to go far after flying to get to work:) :) :)

P.S. now that the airport is going away, does that mean"Uncle Al" is closing up shop as well or just moving to somewhere else?????

i don't care...:D

It wasn't a pretty sight out there today when Schwabe found out about the airport closing. If you wen't to kent you know what I mean, right Jmmccutc. :D He was on his way President Cartwright's office when I left.

holy hell...i wish i had seen that...he didn't die did he?

The KSU operations make up about 90%+ of total daily operations and the airport meets and exceeds their requirements. This talk of the airport being unable to meet future needs because of a lack of expansion prospects is outlandish. In fact the "new" home of the flight school has a shorter runway and is boxed in by roads at either end in a similar set up. The "hope" is that they would be able to get approval there to move one or both roads to expand it to a similar length than 1G3 or beyond. Either way, what's the benefit of moving?

The airport master plan was created according to FAA guidelines that state that an airport must be of XX size to accomidate airplanes of XX size. The commitee decided that 1G3 needed to be able to serve small turboprop and turbojet aircraft as well as your average GA airplane. In order to do that they would need to expand the landlocked runway another 500-1000'. Since they can't do that, the airport is doomed to fail in their eyes so it should be shutdown.

Oddly enough, the airport has been handling numerous aircraft types for years without problems. (Citation I to X, Falcon 10 to 50, King Air 90 to 350). Ask any operator and they would tell you that it wasn't the runway that was the limitation it was the lack of weather reporting. Throw an ASOS/AWOS on the field and they'd be more flexible. Another deciding factor for 135/91 operators is the lack of an FBO. Some of the pilots dreaded sitting there because of there being no accomedations. Again, build an FBO and they would come (or at least stay).

So it boiled down to the fact that they chose an irrelevant standard and because they can't meet those requirements, they're shutting down a perfectly good airport. The flight program doesn't want to do it, the FAA doesn't want to do it and a majority of the locals don't want to do it but the University is throwing in the towel.

As for Schwabe, my prediction is this will kill him before the last airplane takesoff from 1G3.
