SF-340 is the aircraft type. There are three different models of Saabs. There are A, B, and B+ models. So the Saab 340B as you pointed out is strictly a "straight B" model.
The early SAAB 340's (before there were A's or B's) were developed by SAAB - Fairchild (that is the SF part) but Fairchild pulled out of the deal leaving only SAAB. The first 340's delivered to the US had SAAB - Fairchild markings on the aircraft. The markings disapeared fast leaving only SAAB markings.
