Heard coming in over the Bonham Arrival this morning.....

Center: Eagle - say speed
Eagle: 240 sir
Center: Candler say speed
Candler: 230
Center: Eagle, your 240 is slower than Candler's 230.
Eagle: Sir, I don't know how that is..

Just another day in the life of a Brasilia Pilot in DFW. Won't be long before the SAAB's will be able to rest as the Brasilia's are replaced by RJ's and we all stay high and clear of the 'slower traffic ahead'.

Blue Skies

Saab

It took you that long to realize that is our goal in life........to slow your "super fast" birds down??

Happy flying,

Red Baron

Funny, I didn't know that you could get a Saab to do 240. Must have been a fluke. Usually I've got to do about 210 to follow one of those road blocks.

Kinda funny though, when I was in the Dash instead of the Brasilia, the Eagle Saab guys up in Boston used to call us the road blocks. Guess it is all about the perspective.

Seriously though, I do wish the center could get us around them. With the way we at ASA get paid a certain premium pay, it actually costs me a lot of money to be following Saabs everywhere I go all month.

.....

What will the 340 normally indicate in cruise at say 10K and 20K? What about if ATC wants max forward speed?

Thanks,

Scott

Its been a couple of years since I have flown the mighty SAAB at American's Beagle.....but the SAAB will definetly do 250kts below 10K, mid teens about 210-230kts, above that...good luck getting 200kts.

Mayday.

What's the rush? Isn't everyone getting paid block times? :)

Yeah the Saab's a little slow. But it gives SkyWest something to do, racing to beat Eagle to the airport on the West Coast. It seems SkyWest pilots have nothing better to do...no offense, one of my best buddies is a SkyWest captain, and we joke about the Slab and the BraKillia all the time.

I was following SkyWest into SAN the other day. I have to admit, I liked telling the tower I'd slow it up for the Brazilia in front of me. Talk about roadblock. Yeah, and I fly a Slotation...

Are those speeds only in the descent or can you maintain them in level flight? Sorry I couldn't resist. The story I've heard is that a lot of AE guys dislike mgmt so much they just fly the plane slow. Can't say I blame them.
They are a nicer airplane than the E-120 if you're a passenger. No ducking and hunching over required.

Don't knock it till you flied it!!!

Every regional pilot I know gets paid hourly. Ching Ching Ching!!!!

So if you think about it, we Saab drivers are helping all you speedy kids to feed your families. :)

Umm...not quite. At ASA, for those of us who are under guarantee (ie reserves and relief pilots) we actually make more by flying faster. When we beat scheduled block, that time that we beat it by is added onto our base guarantee of 75 hours. For example, if a flight is sched for 1 hour, and we finish it in 45 min, I get 15 mins of pay added on top of my 75 hours. Over the course of a good month, I usually get about 6 hours of this "premium" pay. Really helps us reserve/relief pilots.

Coupled with that is the fact that even most of our line holders are blocked at less than 75 hours, and you may see what I'm getting at.

So basically, the slow Eagle Saabs cost me money, not make me money.

Make sense?

Sabre, since I get neither block-or-better nor bonuses for getting in under block, I am not feeling particularly sorry for you right about now... Jealous, yes, but not sorry. :)

Can't speak for the motivations of Eagle Saab drivers, but this Saab A-model driver has absolutely no reason to fly more slowly than necessary (SCHEDULED block time only), except to ensure we don't cook along so quickly that we routinely beat block times and end up with SHORTER block times on the same leg in future months. In any case, tearing along at near-light speeds is not the forte of our Saabs or ANY Saabs for that matter... But they are hardly "slow" in cruise. Slower than an ERJ? Sure. Poking along thirty knots slower than other TP's? No way. Unless you are talking about a Dornier, of course. :)

The A-model, at least, is heavily dependent upon the OAT to figure its' cruise speed (and ESPECIALLY climb performance). In winter months, you can easily hit the barber pole at any altitude from 10k on down in level flight. A few days ago I did an engine trend at 15k, at ISA-10, at "charted torque" minus four, and was still getting 229 in cruise with half a boatload of peeps. Now it won't do that in summer, not by a long shot... Lop off about 10kts IAS and you get the idea. Throw on the anti-ice and 33 pax and you can kill off another 5kts. Not a hot rod, but I know that other similar craft have similar capabilities. Also keep in mind that we (or should I say I) fly only at charted torque, even if the ITT allows a higher power setting. Our company manual describes any setting higher than that as "emergency power", and I for one don't feel like doing the "rug dance" later if I'm doing charted-plus and get caught... Even if it will shave a minute or two off the leg and give me more time to drink coffee at the destination airport.

Climb performance is another story. In recent weeks, the climb performance has been astonishing by comparison to the same airplanes in the summer months... 20pax, 3800lbs of fuel and 800lbs bags/cargo, doing over 1500fpm in the climb through the low teens at 180KIAS. Nice. And it's only astonishing to me because that same airplane with the same load in ISA+20 with the anti-ice engaged won't do 500fpm in the climb at 160KIAS. EEEEK!! More than once have I had to make the required "Center, unable to maintain 500 feet per minute in the climb" call. It's a little embarassing, but hey, at least I'm not WORKING for a living.

In any case, I rarely hear of anyone being slowed down behind us if we haven't been slowed down first. I can, however, relate to being slowed down going into and out of BOS behind a Dash (when I was in a 1900, not a Saab). Seemed like one time out of five we had to throttle back to keep from running them down. I always assumed it was a "block-or-better" thing and the Dash guys were padding their paychecks... Not that the Dash was inherently slow. But never having flown a Dash, I can't say one way or another. Perhaps a Dash driver with time in and out of BOS can help us out here?

When your talking about speed you can't leave out the mighty
J41. It'll give both the SAAB and 120 a run for the money!

The Saab is a Swedish Helicopter --- it can hover in 3 phases of flight --- climb, cruise, descent.

We get paid by the minute, so who cares how slow the guy in front is going? It just gives you more time to enjoy the scenery.

"Paid by the minute"??

I wish.

Thanks to a deice delay in Pittsburgh, I stopped getting paid for my last leg today around the time I crossed Briggs. For those who don't know, that's the initial fix on the departure westbound.

Trust me, I drive that Saab thing as quickly as I can get away with.

There used to be many road blocks for us Dornier drivers till our new block or better contract. "Bluestreak, slow to 230 knots" "No problem".

IP, you need to stay off my TCAS man. (just messin with ya)
See you in Scholtzskys.

Dork Stats:
10,000 and below 250 kts since our new contract.
15,000 below 270 knots.
15,000 up to FL310 roughly 330 to 340 TAS if flown outside the magical bug limits aka "Home Thrust"

Anyone want to slow down into PIT feel free, I don't give a rats arse anymore.

Anytime, 328dude...

...we're here to help you and your paycheck, you know. You'll get a plasma screen TV yet, thanks to us.

Also, make sure you bring your own mug for coffee in Schlotzky's. 90 cents for a refill (ANY refill) as opposed to $1.53.

More money, you know, in case you want a new surround sound system to go with that new TV we are helping you get! :)

I already have enough stuff in my bag Freeley. I'm more interested in the cheesecake there anyhow. Look for me, I'm the fat one.

Anaconda, if your TSA you guys park at the A gates. Scholtzskys is located over at the Express side.

The magic bus shall lead the way.
