Just landed in IAD with a Colgan Saab landing behind us. Reported in-flight cabin fire. Landed without incident - apparently. Emergency vehicles closed down the west side of IAD for 10 mins to check out the Saab340. No pax were evacuated. Any other details -cause?

There was a jumpseater. There was smoke in the cabin. NO FIRE AND NO EVACUATION. Probably just a burned out pack. But thanks for blowing it out of proportion.
 
Cool! I heard the smoke was from the BS from this site! Someone was using Wi-Fi to access Flightinfo.com and his computer started to pump out smoke inflight! wowo!
 
Never had a pack fail, but I have to say that if that supplemental freon A/C unit fails, it fills the cabin with the most acrid, choking smoke you can imagine. Fortunately for us, we were still at the gate with the jetway connected and we were able to deplane the pax quickly.

I had a Mel today recirc fan was inop it was pretty tight. If not for my awesome piloting skills I may have broken a sweat. I had to have one extra bottle of water today to keep hydrated just in case summer showed its ugly head again.

Cowling screw was loose today had it tightened by maintenance luckily I saw it on my preflight. Also had one of the gear indication bulbs burn out I mean if the other one burned out we wouldnt' have known if the gear was down. I at four bags of pretzels today and I never eat the pretzels I don't know what came over me must have been the stress of all the problems today. I think I may have to quit the new uniform standards are pretty complex I don't know if I can live up to the image.

Oh my gosh, you were there and just had to be the first person to post it on the forums, didn't you? You even added a little cartoon fire picture! How cute!

It's available as optional equipment. Not all come with it installed. Some have a single freon supp AC unit in the rear, others have both an aft and forward unit. There are some limitations on it's use, but they most certainly do exist. The unit is an electrically driven compressor (electric motor driving the compressor via belt drive). The smoke comes into play when the compressor seizes and the motor continues to run and burns the belt. I don't recall and "A" models with it installed, but "B" and "B+" models have it available as optional equipment. Kinda like the prop brake, some have it, some don't.

The above post is the one I was referring to. All of Mesaba's B+ models have the A/C unit in the rear of the cabin, although at least half of the fleet has them deferred. When we flew 9E's straight B models, they had one in front as well. They require either both generators, or the external power to be online. And, climbing through 17,000 ft for the flight levels, you have to recite the poem as a reminder, "Roses are red, violets are blue. Altimeters are set, 2-9-9-2 and although the A/C makes us thrive, it must be turned off by seventeen-five.
