A few months ago on a busy evening at MDW, we had to do a MX taxi to get our plane off the gate. After push back, ground told us to taxi to the hngr with no direction to do so. I told the controller "Echo, 31R, cross both 22's to the hngr" at which point ground came back and wanted to have me go down November. It seems like 99% of the time we always take 31R to the gate and if we didn't TELL him what way we were going to take we could have defintely caused an incursion. If they don't give directions just tell them what your intentions are and they should come back with a proceed or specific instructions. That way no harm no foul I guess.
