About a sizeable reduction bid at CAL.

Staffing models are being done over the weekend...So we are told.

600-900 Flight Attendant positions to be cut one way or another...So we are told.

90% + load factors and losing money...So we are told.

But now I might be mistaken.
Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm.

Heard the same thing this morning from my buddy. Up to 300 furloughs in addition to the 147 hostages. Wow.

Two weeks ago I called one of the CP's in iah to talk and I asked about what was going on. I am already furloughed and I had a two year contract on the table that I needed to make a decision about. I was hoping that talking to him would help me with my choice. He said that CAL was about 150 pilots overstaffed for this summer, there were very few retirements in the pipeline and colas were ending next spring. He said he saw nothing that would make him think that there would be a recall in that two year period. He also said that he has heard more about another furlough versus a recall. Hopefully he just doesn't know.

90% load factor + losing money = broken business model

Rumor Mill must be working overtime.

May 2009: 300 possible retirements (with recalls and hiring).
July 2009: 300 possible furloughs.

Rumor Prediction for August: United and CAL announce merger. Bottom 1/3 of CAL seniority list will be off the property for the next decade.

Rumor Prediction for September: 500 possible retirements. Recalls and hiring. Back to 2 year upgrades.

Rumor Prediction for October: Frank Lorenzo to return to CAL to "clean up the balance sheet" (wage cuts). Possible announcement on the way for a new sister airline called "Go-Continental" flying CRJ-700's.

1) To be a Chief Pilot at CAL, you have to be 101% Pro Company and -1%
Line Pilot
2) To be a Chief Pilot at CAL in IAH, you have to be in lowest circle of
'83-'84 scabs
3) Management believes we are overstaffed because they have a staffing
formula that makes assumptions rosier then Washington in May
4) We are about to unload the economic openers for the contract

End Result= FUPM!

Sorry you had to go to a CP in IAH for info on a difficult decision. I wouldn't trust them to tell me what the weather was outside.

A friend of mine is enroute to Guam this weekend. They were scheduled to pick up his stuff (company paid move) on Thursday, this past week. Monday Chip (Planning) calls him and asks him if they can make an "arrangement" to not move him to Guam as he will likely be moved (at the company's expense) back to the mainland on (or around) October 1. (My buddy is in the bottom 150ish). Company did not want to pay for a move out and a move back within a 3 month period... He (my buddy) seems to think he'll be on the street, not just displaced out of Guam, but it could go either way...). Needless to say, a call went into ALPA, the movers picked up his stuff this week, and he's headed for Guam, even if only for a few months. So, who knows...
