A reporter for Conde' Nast just did that last year. He used not only air travel, but also covered a few miles by car, bus, boat, bicycle, rickshaw, and foot. He didn't go direct though, and took a lot of side trips as he went. The magazine set him up with the latest travel wear from Gucci, Prada, etc to make him as attractive to muggers as possible. He evidently had a good time.

I wonder if one could jumpseat around the world?
