I'm thinking of emigrating to the US (currently fly out of Heathrow for BA). Can anyone tell me what the rosters are like at Majors. For example, do they use a bidline system, how many days do they typically work per month?

I am particularly interested in Continental, so if you have worked there or know someone who does, please reply! In fact I'll be in Houston next week checking the area out with my family, so if you know where some CO pilots can be found, that would be useful too.

Since your job will be open at BA,perhaps you can help one of us Yanks get hired there, hmmm ? I was hoping for the Concorde, but I'll take a 747.

Now that New Orleans is gone, Houston is probably the most misserable city in America. Try to act surprised when you visit, though.

I think the first question you should be asking are the hire rates for foreign pilots. You need to know the requirements that each airline has in place. Do not make the mistake of moving your family and giving up your seniority at your current company.

There are so many pilots here in the U.S. that are currently furloughed - and those pilots will most likely take precedence over anyone coming from another country.

Do some research first before you come. Most new hires for CO end up in Newark (from what I know). I am sure anyone from CO can provide more information on that matter.

Citizenship can be a real hurdle for getting hired, with DOD and CRAF flying imposing some requirements that I am not fully familiar with.

Just to clarify - I'm not crazy and I don't expect to walk into a job! But if I could get one, then and only then would I resign and move. Why? Because of the cost of living in SE England, and the weather. I'm already a US citizen. I'm only 5 years in with BA, so I can still do this without giving loads of seniority up. In fact we are staring down the barrel of a 5 year increase in retirement age, maybe 10, so I'm looking at 10 more years to a command.
The bit I don't know is whether I would be giving up a good stable rostering scheme...or is it just the same in the US. I met an AA FO who worked 12 days a month for twice what I earned working 18...a lot of people in BA ask me what I am still doing there - they'd go if they could.

I didn't realize BA was so bad. I love London though...I'd move in a heartbeat if I could.
