Heading over to Rome, LIRA (Ciampino), in a few months.

First time flying into Italy.

Any recommendations on hotels?

Anything special transitioning into Italy, local procedures, etc.

Any advice is appreciated.

Go to the Vatican. It is a life altering experience.

We stayed at a Marriott that was really nice and in a great location.... I asked at the front desk about things to see in Rome, they gave me a map and circled all the important sight-seeing spots, making for a great all-day walking tour....

And I agree- The Vatican is a must....

I lived in Europe for 10 years and relied heavily on the Rick Steves series of books for hotels and dinning. Was never disappointed in Rome with his dinning recommendations, his hotels can vary but for the most part are good. Use his guide in the book "Mona Winks" to get through the Vatican and Vatican museum. Also, a tour guide recommended this place:

get the fried artichokes for a anti-pasta (starter).
If you are there in August, make sure you get a hotel with AC. Have fun!

Enjoy yourself.

Don't expect great service from the ground handlers and re-fuelers. We lost our slot due to waiting arround for fuel.

Oh yeah they operate a slot system there, go through Universal [we didn't]

The Intercontinental is very nice, and in a great location, 2 minutes from the Spanish Steps.

Check out the fire bombers from the Italian Air Force/Fire Dept/Search & Rescue... etc. etc. on the airfield. Also, its a nasty drive into the city during rush hour from Ciampino.

They have about 125 SID's out of that place, and they are famous for giving it to you right before they... line up and wait. But I've never been burned on that before:erm:.

I love when that happens......November *** line up and wait, and are you ready to copy your clearance to half way around the world, and plug in all the dozens of way points in the FMS because none of these flight plans are stored?....cleared for takeoff!.....go go go go go!!!!!!!!

Marriott on Via Veneto is awesome. You can walk to the spanish steps pretty easily. Also, a really nice piano bar across the street. And, on the other side of the street is a really expensive strip club, which I dont recommend cause one of our captains lost 1000 there one night . But anyway, its a nice hotel.

Get your parking request for LIRA in ASAP, parking in Italy sucks

Strongly suggest you use Uvair as your handler - all the local handling is done by the airport itself, who couldn't care less. Uvair has a local agent who takes care of everything painlessly. One of the few places I would definitely recommend this type of "procurer".
