His PPL book is great, it's a one stop shop, you don't have to own the FARs, just provide the updated pages on a couple of the FARs (or print out his corrections from his website) and they have all they need for the study part.
Heck if someone non-aviation asks me an aviation question, I almost always use Rod's explanation because it's free of the aeronautical jargon, and it's actually not boring.
Though I still suggest the use Gliem for the test prep, and it's easier to reference the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge from Gliem.
