Even a Jetstream 32, King Air 200, CRJ, or anything else is unsafe if not properly trained. The recent (today's) announcement that they [Robinson] just shattered their previous production record with 823 deliveries this year (R-22/R-44 combined) does more than suggest that Frank Robinson's designs have matured to a point of safety and acceptance within the industry.
It's absolutely the best bargain out there, just seek out professional, experienced, R-44 instructors. There is a reason for the SFAR, so pay attention to it, receive the required instruction, and fly your aircraft within it's envelope and you'll love it.
