Hey,
Some quality info would sure be helpful. We're off to the RNC in NYC in Aug and it looks like TEB is going to be a little tight. What other options are there in the aerodrone arena that can get you into NYC area.

Thanks,

TEB is ALWAYS tight. Try HPN as it's a little further from LGA/EWR and that whole mess. The 135 I fly for tries to steer clients away from TEB and toward HPN. During the RNC, everything is going to be a mess anyway. MMU (Morristown) or CDW (Essex County) are options as well. There's always my base at Danbury (DXR) which is outside the bravo but about 1:15 drive to the city.

LGA (requires ARO) is the fastest airport to downtown
JFK, is not bad either. Both are less crowded then TEB and EWR.

You know I hear alot of people who like to send their people to HPN. It might just be my luck, but it seems like HPN gets last call when it comes to ATC. It seems to take me longer to get out of there than TEB. I have had good luck the past year at TEB.

This is not to say it is going to be good at the RNC convention. I just urge everyone to watch out for TFR's like Bostons. TEB is close enought to EWR that when the President flies into EWR they have to shut down TEB. This did happen late last year to me.

I believe I read that LGA will be closed to GA traffic during the convention.
excellent point! being based in HPN I was not aware of that happening.

Good point, I have had this happen to me all the time in HPN. The lower tier Washington folks seem to like it so you can get tied up with the VP or the first Lady.

If that's the case then FRG is under an hour to the Midtown tunnel. You can eaisly spend an hour on the GW Bridge or the West Side HWY coming from TEB

ya TEB is definitely closer in driving miles. Getting into the city no matter if u go to TEB or HPN will be a bitch though. If you dont like heavy traffic area airports, try even going out to ISP instead.

Thanks

Thanks for all the info. I think a stay on Long Island is due. Got any fishing info?
Charter boats, Surf fishing, beachside digs that cater to fishing?
We get tied up with the VP ops monthly here. A large square state out west.

Let me pass on some info from a TSA Meeting last week. Of course this is subject to change, but at least its a heads up.

1) Helicopter traffic will be allowed into the East and West heliports (Downtown/Wall Street will be closed), but the helicopter/crew/pax must pass security by stopping at Morristown or Farmingdale before going to the city. No traffic will be exempt.

2) Teterboro was going to be closed, but they fought to keep it open. All the TFRs are being put up by the Secret Service, so things are gonna be tough. If anything happens in Boston, or if anyone makes a wrong turn departing TEB, the airport will be shut down. The TFR is a 7nmr No Fly around MSG. TEB is 6.6nm and will be a cutout.

3) TEB will have HEAVY security screening and additional security procedures. They may bring in metal detectors, dogs, etc. LGA will be closed to all GA traffic (91 and 135).

4) HPN seems to be your best bet, but I'm sure it won't be much better than any other place in the area.

Alternative to TEB

BLM is 1 hour south of NYC, on the Jersey Shore and alot to do while you wait (beaches, bikinis, thongs, lobster) but the airport isn't the greatest but simple. It will not have alot of traffic.

The Pres. usually does not fly into EWR - they do not like to drive through the tunnels to get to NYC. This goes back to the Carter years. Many times (since 9/11) they use either McGuire AFB or Lakehurst NAS (both in NJ) and chopper in.

The president did fly into EWR earlier this year and then used Marine One to get around. So he has gone in recently.

Mike1mc- very good information. The only thing I would add is that if the weather becomes imc and they may shut down TEB all together. This is due to missed approach procedures that may put planes too close for the Goverments comfort

Blm

Hey be careful with BLM.......... a little known fact.....if you look into the notams........it states no aircraft over 30k allowed....it a got cha if you are not careful........... i vote FRG good airport fairly close to city helicopter service can get into city in 15 minutes...........

When is the RNC and/or what days would TEB be affected the most? Going to New York the 6th- 8th. Just curious. Thanks

Don't rule out Newburgh, KSWF, just up the Hudson River. They land C-5's there and its about 50 mins to Manhattan on the Thuway, I-87.

As if TEB isn't bad enough on a "normal" day....... Ugh. Wouldn't it be splendid if a nice line of thunder-boomers rolled through every evening???!!! Aviation International News has a good article about the goings'-on's during the RNC that everyone should read before starting the engines. The same information is available elsewhere I'm sure. Someone more saavy than me should post a link with all the information about who to call, what to expect, etc..... Good luck all!!!!!

Frg

Definetly go with FRG!!! You've got the Long Island Railroad five minutes away from FRG with an abundance of hotels around the area. It's just a 50 minute train ride into Manhattan from there with trains running frequently. The best thing is the railroad pulls right into Penn Station, just under where the RNC will be. No need to worry about driving into that clusterfu@@ around that time of year with alerted terror warnings plus the convention, it will be a zoo!!

I've heard that Penn Station will be shut down during the convention becuase it is under MSG (never did hear what they planned on doing with all the LIRR trains). FRG will also be a "portal" into Manahattan for helicopter traffic and I'm sure will be quite busy. Then again, allt hese airports are going to be insane. Maybe its time to think about that vacation...
