Press Release - Teamsters Oppose Creation of Start Up Airline
TEAMSTERS LOCAL 747 OPPOSES CREATION OF START UP AIRLINE
Local Files Grievance to Halt Unfair Competition
(Indianapolis, IN)-- On Tuesday, February 11, 2003, Teamsters Local 747 filed a group grievance on behalf of the pilots of Chautauqua Airlines to stop the improper creation of Republic Airlines by their parent company, Republic Airways Holdings, Inc. The grievance is based on the violation of the Transfer of Aircraft Prohibition in the scope provision of the current contract. Local 747 claims that the “alter ego” Republic Airlines will inhibit the growth of Chautauqua and may also threaten the future of existing Chautauqua code share agreements. Chautauqua currently provides regional service for American Airlines, America West Airlines, Delta Airlines and US Airways.
In a preliminary Q&A session posted on their web site, Chautauqua CEO, Bryan Bedford, stated that the new Republic Airline will only be used for US Airways code share, but recent conflicting statements by Republic CEO, Tom Hanley, has proven otherwise. At a press conference, Mr. Hanley stated, “our business plan is to be attractive to a number of carriers.” Mr. Hanley also said, “Republic hopes to build up to 50 airplanes,” which is also contradictory to the current Republic/US Airways agreement that limits the aircraft to 23, also stated in Mr. Bedford’s Q&A statements.
Republic Airlines was created after the Chautauqua pilots turned down a “Jets for Jobs” agreement, which would have provided one-half of the jobs to furloughed US Airways pilots. The agreement would have also provided a furlough protection to the US Airways pilots, superior to that of the Chautauqua pilots’. The Union has been in discussions with the US Airways MEC of the Airline Pilots Association, in an attempt to negotiate a more favorable “Jets for Jobs” agreement and keep the additional flying at Chautauqua, rather than Republic.
