Republic Airlines or Nice Cessna 340 job?

Im looking for some advice here... I have an opportunity to fly a Cessna 340 in southern ohio for 36k a year only working 3-4 days a month and an offer at rebublic to fly as a F/0 on the ERJ-170. I know that going to the regional airline would be probably the smarter choice for my career. But it would also be awesome to only work a few days a month and make some decent money. Do you think it would be hard to move on to another better paying corporate job from the 340 job since I will only be flying 150 hours a year? Do you guys have any advice?
 
3-4 days a month!?! 36k!?! What's the catch here? :confused:
 
Take the 340 job before I beat you to it. No catch here, nothing to see here folks. 3 to 4 days a month!!!! I'd take it and run. Plus if later on you should feel the need to go to something better and bigger, NJA and companies like it will always be there. Avoid airlines if you can.
 
take the 340 job and start buying rentals, then buy your own beaver or something. or be broke forever, your choice
 
Take the 340 job and on your days off, go to the airport and sit in your uniform for 10 hours. It'll feel the same as the Republic job.
 
Im serious there is no catch! I met they guy flying for him now. Hardly ever works. Im just worried that I wont be building enough time to move on to something else later that pays more.
 
Sounds to me that you do not have goal in mind for you aviation career, and that you just want to fly airplanes. Set yourself a goal. The answer to your question will be obvious then.
 
Well my goal has been to build time at a regional then move on to a better corporate job or major airline. Its just hard to turn down an offer to make decent money and hardly have to work. I am a little concerned that I wont be building enough time flying the 340.
 
I work for the RAH family and my advice is to take the 340 job. Things have gone well for me here, but I don't see it the same for someone getting hired today.

I used to work for AirNet and if I could've made the same $$$ with the same bene's working "normal" hours flying a recip. I probably would've stayed.
 
I would take the 340 job and get a non-flying job on the side to make extra money, you should be able to bring in at least 60k between the 2. When you goto the airlines and fly everyday, it's not all that. But if you fly the 340 a few days a month, I think you'll enjoy it much more. How stable is this 340 job by the way?
 
Agreed. Just what is your career goal anyway?

Flying a twin engine Cessna until the guy changes his mind?

In all seriousness. Do you want to fly at a major?

If yes you have 3 options:
1. GO TO A REGIONAL GET PIC
2. Go to military
3. Fly Corporate(the 340 3-4 days a month does not count)

Flying 3 or 4 days a month will not get you the time you need to be competitve at the majors.

Sounds like a great job, but you need to decide what your long term goals are.
 
If you take the 340 job you can work up a contract business on the side. Depending on where you live you should be able to make at least what a senior RJ capt. makes. Probably can get to know peeps and end up doing turbine work for several companies.

There are many ways to a Major, none of which are guaranteed. You have to look at your personal situation.

You want to fly for a major or a reputable corporate gig? If so, and you are fairly low on time, and you can afford the poverty first year pay, I would take the RJ job.

If you just like being in aviation though and would be happy in that cush job for 36K, I would be all over it!

It just depends on your long term goals. I agree with what the other guy said that this little of 340 time is not going to help you much in the long run as far as getting into the Major/Corporate world.

If you need to build time, go to the regional.

if you are worried about building time instruct when not in the 340. At least this way you can be picky about the students

I don't mean to pelt you with semantics, but wouldn't renting a beaver be a better alternative to "or something" or "being broke forever"?
 
What's he have you do the other 27 days of the month? Wash his car and mow the lawn? You've got to admit Director of Flight Operations/ Chief Pilot/Director of Flight Training/Catering Coordinator and Manger of Fabreze Application does look good on a resume'.
 
If you really have 4800 hours I'd say take it!

If you don't or get bored easy I would just instruct and get my gold seal, AGI, and smooze with the local DE's until you can get yours. That's just my dream. Scaring the crap out of private applicants for 125 an hour!

p.s. $36k isn't that much.


My thoughts exactly. It's certainly not that much if you continue to do the job 2-3 years down the line. That's decent pay for that type of equipment, but you won't see much more than that in years to come if you stick it out with these guys. If not a regional, depending on your time, I'd go to a 135 jet operator, but it all depends on your career goals.

You are going to be much happier, have a better quality of life, and you will be the envy of RJ types that go the same places every day do the same thing every day... no variety....no fun.... (Ground Hog Day)

Going to some commuter/"regional" to fly a RJ is really a vile thought. (If you want to have no life, make crap money, and get no respect.) + Doesn't Republic make you sign some ridiculous 2 yr $15,000 training contract for a stinking checkout in the right seat of an RJ?

Frankly I see no point of going to a commuter. The old argument "To get on with a major" is out the window... since the as a RJ pilot you are destroying the very thing you are working to obtain... a job at a major. It is going to many years before things are better at the majors (if ever).

Take the 340 job.

If you already have 4800 hours, an ATP and King Air 200 time (not sure how much, or if it is PIC) like your profile says, why aren't you applying at a major? Seems like you're competitive for NetJets too. :erm:
 
The 340 time will be good PIC. You will probably make more contacts around the FBOs so you could move up in the corporate world.
