Dark clouds of smoke rise from a field where Malaysian Airlines 777 was shot down Thursday.
A Malaysia Airlines passenger plane was reportedly shot down in Ukraine near the Russian border Thursday.
The Boeing 777 had 280 passengers and 15 crew members, Interfax reported citing an an aviation industry source.
Malaysia Airlines confirmed it lost contact with the flight.
It came down just 20 miles short of entering Russian airspace near the town of Shakhtyorsk, in an area where the Ukrainian government has been fighting pro-Russian rebels.
It "began to drop, afterwards it was found burning on the ground on Ukrainian territory," a unidentified source told Reuters.
Flight Aware shows the flight was heading from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the main international airport in the Netherlands, to Kuala Lumpur International Airport outside Kuala Lumpur, the most populous city of Malaysia.
The flight reportedly departed at 12:14 a.m. local time.
This is the first Malaysia Airlines flight to crash since Flight 370, which mysteriously vanished in March ? sparking an international search effort.

Rip to the victims. Someone on twitter posted that it was flight 17 today is the 17th and the aircraft that was involved made it's first flight on 7/17/97 17 years ago today. Also twa 800 crashed 18 years ago today (if that was 17 that would be very strange) Pure coincidence and I'm sure nothing related. but weird and this is very tragic

Man I hear you! I just changed the ch to ESPN as he started up his ignorant opinions (facts he sometimes call them). He was tolerable when he was on CNBC I think it was, but no where near an aviation expert.

I will be scarred forever for watching that video. It was my own fault for watching it but I've never seen anything like that and was not prepared for it. What kind of sick fu%^ would film that

Your interpolation went haywire there, bud.

You couldn't be more wrong about my patriotism (and willingness to show it, for that matter) as well as my disappointment that Russia seems to be headed right back to 1962. Putin needs a wee bit of lead poisoning, no doubt, but you cannot deny that this country's helm is being tended to by the bilge rats right now.

I agree with you guys about Putin. I bet the rebels responsible for this and the Russian military personnel involved will suddenly and mysteriously vanish. Dead men tell no tales. Putin will say "No credible evidence" Russia was involved, thus raising his middle finger to the rest of the world. Also, I'm not up to speed on surface to air missiles. Any military types out there to shed light on missiles and specs that may have been fired.
