Rental and instructor cost?

Is $140 an hour for a Skyhawk reasonable wet? Also $40 an hour for instructor? I am in Va BEach Va if that matters.

It does matter where. Rental fees vary all over the place, depending on local operating costs, fuel prices, hangering fees, supply vs demand and weather (generally, the more VFR days, the lower the cost).

That said, WOW!!!! $140 per hour wet for a Skyhawk is, by far, the highest price I have ever heard of in the United States, even if it's a brand new one. I know that prices are definitely lower in Denver, but I can rent a 2002 Turbo Skylane T182Twith onboard oxygen and a normal 145 KT cruise speed for less than that.

Is it the only available airplane within 100 miles?

Crikey. I used to rent a 172 for twenty three bucks an hour. I think 150's were fifteen bucks an hour then. Or there abouts. Its hard to operate a 172 for less than about sixty bucks an hour now...but a hundred forty? They must be proud.

Assuming you mean a fixed-gear 172, definitely not. You probably could rent a Seminole for that kind of money. Last I checked in Denver, 172s were going for about $65/hour.

That is about right. Instruction in Denver was going for about $35/hour.

Don't pay $140/hour for 172 time.

That's what I pay my instructor, and 110 on the plane.

New skyhawks are expensive and the schools love them. I wish they had older (allright, just cheaper planes)

As always this site is right on the money. I can drive an extra 15 minutes and use a little older A/C for $88 and $35 for the instructor. I am getting ready to get back on the horse the first of the year so I am looking for places to train now.

I pay $145/hour (with instructor) for a 1976 C172 - but I live in Tortola, BVI and they're pretty much the only game in town.

In Los Angeles you can rent an older 172 for $70-$85. I'd keep looking around if money is an issue for you.

If you're in the Norfolk/Newport News/Virginia Beach area, it's a logical question. If you are, there is a military flying club at Ft. Eustis. I can just about guarantee rates are lower there.

If you're not military, it sounds like you're beginning to shop around for a better deal. I know there's a school at PHF, but couldn't tell you anything of the rates. My father had a Citabria there for several years.

Yes I am military but driving to the other side of the bridge would not be cost effective. However I did find a place for under $90 an hour for a 172. I will be checking them out soon. Shame the Norfolk Flying Club is gone at NAS Norfolk.

$140 is high.
In Savannah, older 172's go for about $85, and the New "S" models rent for $105.

Here in Baltimore, Maryland at the flight school that I teach, the rate for an older skyhawk is $91.00 and $40.00 for the instructor. Out of the $40.00 I get $21.00 per instruction hour.

That's pretty high. Here are the rates for a place in the PHX area with one of the newest fleets in the valley.

Instructors are $40/hour and they DO NOT SCREW YOU when charging you for ground instruction.
