My CFI will expire on 6/05, which is when i will be about 3/4 of the way through UPT. I am wondering if I should just do an online renewal and get it done with now, or will I have time during Phase III to get it done?
You could wait or do it later, it depends on a few things. At the 3/4 way point through the T-1 Program you will most likely have a good handle on things and have time for an online course to renew and not let your CFI go non-current. If you already meet the renewal requirements through recency of experience, number of successful checkride sign offs, and so on or will have those numbers met before you start UPT, you could wait. You would have to do the research for the closest FSDO to CBM, I don't have a clue on this one, Jackson, MS or Memphis, TN or perhaps Birmingham, AL, then you would have to have a day off during their business hours which will also be normal duty hours for you to take the trip to have it done in person. Not having been a T-1 student or IP, I can't really tell you the pace of the program, I know that you will for sure be past the first checkride in T-1s, and probably past the Navigation check, the toughest in the program, and maybe pretty close to being complete. That of course depends on wx, mx, IP availability, your ability to stay healthy and so on. I know it is not unusual for a few guys at DLF to finish almost a month before graduation. Sorry for no solid answers. Hope this helps.
Don't even sweat it...Make an appointment with the closest FSDO after you complete UPT and they will renew your CFI ticket without a question asked. As 135 pilot we do the same thing without bothering to do a FIRC. This should apply to a military aviator as well.
