Anyone have any info about the regionals in anchorage alaska. I know the pays not very good anyone know what the pay and is anything going on with them.

Reginals in ANC

The only 2 true regionals are Penn Air and ERA, both start you in the "Bush" flying 206/207. Money is good in the bush, but they don't like to hire unless you are there. Someone dreaming of being a bush pilot from the east coast has to show up and prove they are serious. Bush pay when I flew was like $32 per hour on the tach. Good luck!

Slumming is partially correct; Penair does have 207s but ERA does not. Pay for both is about the same (mid 20's for first year FO). ERA generally hires into the Twin Otter - Penair hires into everything. I dont know about Penair but last I heard ERA was not hiring. Fun flying though if you can get on. Be prepared for very slow movement as both companies have senior pilots that arent leaving on the top end. Both are non-union carriers. Anything else you need to know just send me a PM.

Both wrong.

Neither of them have 207's. ERA has only turbine twins, while Penair does have some Cherokee 6's and Navajos. Right now Penair hires into the right seat of their Caravans. They fly them two pilot after an accident in 2001. They used to hire into the right seat of the Metro, but now those pilots are coming from the Caravans.

Any when the upgrade comes from FO to Captain at both carriers? And what is Captain pay at both?
As stated, neither carrier has C207's.

I am one of those guys who is in fligt training, and have heard fomr people that airlines aren't interested in AK time, is this true? I would like as long as you have your 1000 PIC Turbine, your OK, even in the Twin Otter.
Please confirm!

Thanks!

I think the airlines respect time in Alaska. I flew out of Fairbanks for two and half years. Everyone knows how challenging flying up there can be. Besides, the experience will provide for many stories in an interview.
But like someone else posted, you have to be standing in front of them before they will consider hiring you. I drove from Ohio to Fairbanks and slept in my car for a week before I got a job. And then i started out on the ramp for several months first. So be prepared to prove how interested you are.

Wrong Again

Neither of them have 207's. ERA has only turbine twins, while Penair does have some Cherokee 6's and Navajos. Right now Penair hires into the right seat of their Caravans. They fly them two pilot after an accident in 2001. They used to hire into the right seat of the Metro, but now those pilots are coming from the Caravans.

Cherokee's Navajos Caravans Metros and Saabs. What you start in depends on experience, the interview process and a whole series of other things...oh and a lucky roll of the dice doesn't hurt.

Generally the 1200+ hour pilots with AK time will have a chance at the Cherokee.

Pilots with less than 750 will end up as a 208 SIC, 750+ and no AK time will up the odds of a Metro or Saab right-seat, which one depends on that lucky roll of the dice.

Once you are hired and assigned an airplane( based on the above) the upgrade process will go something like this:

When 208 SIC has 750+ hours he/she can upgrade to the right seat of the Metro or Saab, unless they like flying the bush and wish to remain there where they can continue to fly SIC build more time(the min TT needed is 1200hrs) and upgrade to a Cherokee. After sufficient experience is obtained they can upgrade to the left seat of a 208 and then a Metro or Saab (left seat).

If the SIC 208 reaches 750+ hours and does not wish to remain in the bush the progression is to move to Anchorage, fly SIC in the SA227 or SF34 then upon reaching 1200 hoursTT, go back to the bush to PIC time in the Cherokee. When sufficient experience is reached an upgrade to the left seat of the Caravan Metro or Saab will follow. This seems to depend on their need and your desire. Although the proces seems a bit vague it works.
One more option, 750+ hour new hires may just end up SIC in the Metro or Saab (more lucky dice needed)

Now, with all that said, nothing is for sure.

One thing is certain, you will fly 1000+ hours a year especially on the 121 side of the company.

Era does not have any piston aircraft. The fleet consist of 9 DHC-6 Twin Otters, 3 DHC-8's and two CV-580's whith one scheduled to go by the years end and the 2nd one by the end of March 2005. We are suppossed to get more Dash 8's to replace the Convairs - the rumor is -200's and -300's. I personally hope they get 3 -300's which can somewhat absorb the Convair capacity.
There isn't a whole lot of movement now at Era, but within the last 6 months we have lost 7-8 pilots which does add up as we have 80 total. These next few months should be very interesting with regards to the sale - could be the best thing that ever happened at Era!

As mentioned above, Era does send newhires out to BET, but not always. The last June class were all assigned ANC because none of the BET guys opted to reassign to ANC - go figure.

Feel free to ask any other questions.

Era sale

what is the latest gossip on the sale? any thoughts/ideas???

Do you think they would replace the fleet with different a/c or keep everything the same... except the name??

Cheers

That is for sure. Some of the pilots would "time out" and earn themselves paid vacation.
That hasn't been an issue lately, but I do recall hearing about it happening a few years ago!

Haven't been into work for the last 5 days, I'll chek to see whats new tommorrow.

Hi there- I posted a message on a Penair/ERA question on a different post- check it out for more info. Good luck!
