Hey just want to save you the silent humiliation of purchasing a leather jacket with stripes. It's almost as bad as the civil air patrol wearing F-16 jump suits for a C172.....I guess you could lose pressurization at 4500 ft, or pull 10 g's.
Anyway...most mainline and regional guys goof on those jackets because they look so unprofessional and rediculous.

I ve seen a bunch of mainline guys wearing them........i m still decieding my opinion on them.......I do know that everyone needs Pilot Shirts:) www.garffshirts.com

Here a Pitch, there a Pitch, everywhere a Pitch Pitch(whistling in the backround and fading a way)

Yeah,
Try starting out in DEN, jet up to FAR in Jan, bebop over to ORD, down to CID, back to DEN, shoot out to ABQ, slide into LAX, quick hop down to SAN, back to LAX, do a few turns to PHX and TUS, finish up in DEN and commute home to ...
You will be moving through 2 time zones and going from -40F in FAR to +75F in SAN. If you get only the gay dinner jacket you will need a Mr Rogers sweater, and a chester overcoat, try carrying all that crap for 4 days and 7-8 A/C swaps.
The only mainline and regional guys who "goof" on these jackets are the mainline guys who do HNL turns and regional dorks who fly in 1/2 of a time zone. I have been doing the timezone shuffle for 6+ years and have watched numerous guys trade in the dinnerjacket/childmolester coat for the leather jacket with the zip out liner from Perrone Leather in NY. Does it look professional? I dont know, dont really care, when I do a walk around in FAR at -40F, I want to be able to a professional quality walkaround without having to hurry because I am too cold and want to be inside quickly. And when I have to do a plane swap during a 45 min turn I don't wanna drag overcoats, and sweaters that I wont use for 1/2 of the trip from plane to plane. Disregard MR SF340 F/O he will get one once he starts to have to do the multi-region shuffle, as described above!

You must fly one of those high-performance jets with winglets! Coooool!

Yeah...us Saab drivers only operate in 1/2 of a timezone. You've got us figured out. I remember when I flew the APU transport (Avro) for about 6 years. We flew all over the Central and Eastern half of the US from Utah to sunny Florida. I never saw any of our guys wearing or wanting a leather coat. I think it looks very tacky on an airline pilot.

So do backpacks, but that has been covered in another thread and I know if you start offering fashion tips (no black Reeboks please) you'll get flamed on this board.

They may be slightly warmer, but stand a couple of leather jacket guys next to a couple of blazer guys and the difference is amazing. It's all just opinion, but in my opinion they look horrible. I don't know many Mustang drivers from World War II that are still flying airliners. . .

You can't buy them new any more, but if you look on E-Bay you might be able to find a Michael Jackson red leather jacket for cheap. All of the zippers might set of the metal detectors in security. You might even get the seller to throw in a sequined glove, maybe two if your lucky. Those gloves help when it's 1 degree and you're standing outside waiting for your roomate to see if his car will start.

Excuse me, but how does a leather jacket look unprofessional on a pilot?

ATA and southwest guys got 'em - they look fairly sharp to me.

Let me guess, its the whole "embarrassed to be a pilot" generation "Y" thing, right? sheesh

Its not like we are talking goggles and scarfs here.

"Child molester coat".....LMAO

The leather jackets feel much more comfortable than the blazers. If it's mild out, I'll wear my blazer. But if I'm going to some cold overnights, the leather is nice. I can just take off the stripes and name patch and wear it out. It beats wearing a black trench coat or having to pack seperate clothing.

Coooool? not really, good for you, you have an opinion! Thats exactly what it is, I gave my personal reasoning and opinion and its worth exactly what you paid for it! I ahve worn a uniform of one type or another for my entire adult working life (30 years aprox) and if you wear a properly fitted, tailored, pressed and cleaned you will look just fine. My leather jacket is tailored and fitted to fit my lumpish body. If you dont like the way it looks, look away. You won't hurt my feelings. If you think a uniform makes you a professional, so be it. My company offers the choice and I exercise that right. If that is a problem for you, guess what it's your problem. If the majority of pilots spent 1/10th the time doing something about their industry we wouldn't be where we are today. Go to your chapter meetings support your union reps, make yourself known to the LEC, ect.

Told you I'd get flamed for writing about personal appearance! Thank you PBR. You missed the ribbing of my post. I found it interesting that you painted Saab drivers in a corner with your "1/2 timezone" comment. You made it sound like only you jet drivers have to cross timezones or deal in various climates.

I also think a uniform makes you look professional (coats for doctors, suits for businessmen, etc.). I never said a leather jacket was unprofessional, just dumb looking on an airline pilot.

People can continue to wear leather jackets, or black Reeboks, or bright orange backpacks, or badly tailored blazers (your sleeves should not end at your forearms), or whatever else they find lovely. It's only my problem in that I get a good chuckle out of you. :)

I think the leather "Maverick" jacket is gay. It is reserved for those Top Gun pilots whose "Daddy" works at United.

As for comfort, I work indoors. I don't need any subthermal testicular protection when I overnight in YUL. I simply stay inside. If I must go outside (walk around/walk out to hotel van) I just walk faster.

What's the slam on the CAP for? The flight suit is worn because it's NOMEX not because it has any anti-g properties. I was a CFII in the CAP...I opted for the kahki pants and logo shirt for routine flights. And, the last time I checked the CAP is still an Auxilliary of the USAF and they do have uniform requirements.

Now, those guys at the EAA fly in who wear flightsuits and other military garb...now that's funny.

If it's that cold isn't it the FO's turn to do the walkaround?

I've had a Perrone for over 5 years and am still quite happy with it. Perrone still manufactures in the USA. I've seen jackets made overseas that cost about the same and offer less quality. I'm with PBR on the practicality issue. Plus on overnights you can remove the nametag and stripes if you're walking somewhere when it's cold out. Saves you from having to cram a jacket in the rollerbag.

Dave,
I still do a walkaround a day to keep my head in that end of the game, and more importantly, I would never ask my crew to do anything I wasn't willing to do myself, its called leadership.

PBR, you're one of the very few. I really respect a captain that takes a turn outside once in a while. Curious how this "captain's responsibility" is one that is almost always delegated.

Do some guys carry their Military insignia and name patch and replace them for their overnights to the bars?

Great Idea! Now why didn't I think of that?

I still do some of the walkarounds and I'll catch some of the postflights, especially at an RON. I'm ex-military and agree with the tenet of never asking someone to do something that you can't do yourself. On FFOD's I'm usually pretty busy with reviewing the MX can, originating check, legalities, limits, etc., so the zero dark thirty, 40 below preflight gets delegated. Luckily I'm not seeing as much snow as I used to but the base seniority is a bit different here. Hope you're doing well PBR.
