Why don't the install rear stairs in a/c these days? Seems it would be much easier and faster when on the ground...

They use airbridges nowadays meh think.

Back in the 60s when the 727s and the DC-9s were invented, they just parked on the ramp and folks walked across the tarmac to the terminal.
 
Rear stairs add a lot of weight and complexity. There's no sense adding that if it's not going to be used.

Utilizing rear stairs requires trapsing out on the ramp, not something modern passengers want to do. They're out in the elements, have to carry all their carry-on crap up and down stairs, nosiy, etc. Not to mention installation is just more money in production, something neither manufactorers nor airlines want.

The stairs on the 727 are actually the ac's tailstand. On the McD-80 series they're for enterance/exit only.
