Granted, the airlines had alot more money to spend pre- 9/11, however, I read that before Delta retired the 727, they were looking into re-engining it with what I believe were CFM engines. They would remove the #2 engine position and S-Duct and end up with a twin engine 727.

Why would Delta or even American not re-engine the MD-80 with the BMW or IAE powerplants to increase fuel efficiency?

Aslo, how would they afford the management bonuses if they spent all that money on engines? C'mon now!
