  • ANA is reporting the 787 is over 20% more fuel efficient than the 767
  • 9 in 10 passengers say the aircraft exceeded their expectations
Good news for 787 customers

Gotta question what type of new math number magic they are employing to get 20% better numbers. I understand that the new engine on the 787 will be better then what was offered in the past but 20% increase for an engine that uses the same cycle (squeeze, burn, blow - with a lot of bypass) is just a little far fetched.

With a lighter aircraft and new wing making more lifties and less draggies along with the more efficient squeeze burn blower thingies I think it is possible.

There also isn't the drag on the engines of multiple systems needing bleed air.

Just really big generators (two each side I think) to provide the power for those multiple systems. Same load, but maybe more efficient delivery. Just hope you don't have electrical problems.

4 starter/gens each putting out 250 kVA. Plus two on the APU at 225 each. Variable freq too, so no CSD to worry about, 380-800Hz.

I haven't seen the internal company data, so I cannot verify this numbers as haven come from ANA, but if it was an official company report, I can assure you that the figures are accurate. The reliability numbers are going up as well according to the engineering team, it looks likes the 787 will live up to expectations.

Sorry airbus foiled again.

How does that variable generator without the CSD work? The MD-90 has the same type of generator...

doides and such, it's an electrical thing.

Works just like the alternator on your car, the ones we've been driving around for thirty years.

Hey, I'd be happy to fly that 787 is someone would let me.... Looking at Pprune, looks like Qatar and Etihad will be hiring onto their growing 787 fleets in the near future (Qatar will start to get a few in September I believe).

Nice looking airplane - here's a great photo of a JAL 787 - nice external view of the pilots with the HUDs (the 787 is pretty at any angle):

JAL's future was uncertain just a few years ago and now they are ramping up on 787s and 777s. Not bad for those guys! Looks like ANA and JAL are in a race to see who can add more 787s...
