I just got back from the Indy 500 and was wondering how do you get lucky enough to fly for the race teams?

I have a few friends who fly for NASCAR teams and they say it can be very hard work. I'm not sure about Indy Car, but last month's Pro Pilot had an article on Kelley (sp?) Racing. You may also want to check out RTAA.org. It's geared towards NASCAR and headquartered in the CLT area, but it has members from all types of racing I think.

Hey thanks for the quick response I just happened to go bye Signature and Raytheon and was amazed with the awesome aircraft that follow the teams. Plus I am a big open wheel racing fan.

I dont follow it as closely as I used to, but I went to the Indy 500 from 88-92. I always loved the smell of hot rubber and burning alcohol on the front straight when the green flag dropped. It was nice to see Dave get a win in this year.

Roger Penske just bought an RJ, to be used as a shuttle to and from Nascar races. Based in Wilmington, DE.

I have heard bad things about Penske. A lot of turnover there. That is what I heard about flying for him personally. He expects you to work all the time. He thinks since he can work hard and be gone a lot of days you can too. Flying for one of his teams might be different.

I too justgot back from Indy 500. I not sure what the racing team pilots get, but we ( the other pilot and myself) got flag lot parking, Eighth floor Pagoda(I talked with Morgan Freeman), Gasoline alley suites, and Pit passes courtesy of our celebrity boss. We are going to another race next week...I can't wait. The right corporate gig is the only way to go!!!

I know this area well. If you want the really good jobs in this industry you must be well qualified. Usually thousands of hours and in the type they are looking for.

Are those the guys that had the Saab 2000? It's race weekend here now, always love going out to the airport and seeing 50 turbines and jets sitting on the ramp.

I heard recently that Henrick bought GM's other two Saab 2000's for his race teams.

The race team gig isn't all that bad. I flew for one for a little while. It can be hard work though. Usually your gone from Thurs. to Sun. every week during race season. But at the same time it can be pretty fun.

What is the most widely used aircraft for race teams?

Not exactly sure what the most widely used aircraft is.... There is quite a variety.... Hendrick has a 727 and couple of Gulfstreams and I think some other stuff maybe.. Theres a little bit of everything, but I think for the most part it is usually smaller stuff for the car drivers. Falcon 10's , Lears, Citations, and some king air's

Not to be picky but Hendrick has Saab 2000 not 727 and I believe one Gulfstream

Roush has the 727(s). At Atlanta, I saw some EB120's that belonged to DEI, Everham Racing and RCR. Mostly late model King Air's and Lear's, a few Citation CJ's, a III and a Falcon 200. Gibbs Racing has a GI. Penske had the Saab 2000 (to be replaced by a CRJ), along with Hendrick now.

My bad..... Last time a flew to a race was the Brickyard last year.. I think that its Roush that has the 727. I think that Rick Hendrick flys on a GIII, I used to see him down in Key West alot. Sorry if my info wasn't correct...

DEI aslo has a BE200. I think Bill Elliot was in here in a CJ2 last weekend, Bill Davis Racing has an EMB120, BE300, and a BE1900. I think the Citation III Fokker saw was Jasper Engines, Ricky Rudd had a Falcon 10 last year.
