I fly for Ram Air, which is almost identical to Package Express, and while I won't speak for them, I can tell you that commuting while working for such a company is not an option for several reasons:
1. I doubt RC has any jumpseat agreements with any airlines, especially since 9/11. Our op specs (and I'm sure Race City's) don't allow for non-employees to ride in the plane so there's no incentive for another company to let us ride for free. You may be able to con your way onto a flight, but I wouldn't count on doing that on a daily basis. And as the previous poster said, you'll at least need a badge, and I have yet to see a RC driver with one.
2. You fly Monday through Friday. If you missed a flight because you were stuck in Orlando, you might as well just stay down there because you won't have a job. Try to explain that on an airline interview.
3. There will be times when you are expected to fly earlier or later and therefore the company expects you to be available. Although you fly a "schedule," it is still an on-demand charter company.
There are other reasons, but the bottom line is that you'll have to live where the airplane is. Plus, I would think that if the company found out that you're trying to commute from MCO, they'll probably take you off the run. They wouldn't take the risk with you not being able to make it to work.
Like I said, I don't work for RC, but Ram and RC are so identical that what I've written surely applies.
Any RC drivers out there to back me up?
