Got the call today from Tyson about a run (Charleston SC)...only a 2 hour run report time of 15:30 L....The problem is I live in Orlando and really can not re-locate. I really want to do this...passed the ground school a few weeks ago in Concord NC...and really do not mind commuting especially wit honly a 2 hour run...no biggie! Are there any other 135 Carriers our of Charleston I can hitch a ride with (Airnet etc.) This is my first 135 job, so forgive my naivete. Thanks!!!

are they giving you badges @ Race City now? i think you need a badge to commute.

I fly for Ram Air, which is almost identical to Package Express, and while I won't speak for them, I can tell you that commuting while working for such a company is not an option for several reasons:

1. I doubt RC has any jumpseat agreements with any airlines, especially since 9/11. Our op specs (and I'm sure Race City's) don't allow for non-employees to ride in the plane so there's no incentive for another company to let us ride for free. You may be able to con your way onto a flight, but I wouldn't count on doing that on a daily basis. And as the previous poster said, you'll at least need a badge, and I have yet to see a RC driver with one.

2. You fly Monday through Friday. If you missed a flight because you were stuck in Orlando, you might as well just stay down there because you won't have a job. Try to explain that on an airline interview.

3. There will be times when you are expected to fly earlier or later and therefore the company expects you to be available. Although you fly a "schedule," it is still an on-demand charter company.

There are other reasons, but the bottom line is that you'll have to live where the airplane is. Plus, I would think that if the company found out that you're trying to commute from MCO, they'll probably take you off the run. They wouldn't take the risk with you not being able to make it to work.

Like I said, I don't work for RC, but Ram and RC are so identical that what I've written surely applies.

Any RC drivers out there to back me up?

First 135 job?

This is your chance for some good experience and time, I would consider moving if the company is stable enough.

Give them a year or so and build that time up. Dont make this profession any harder than you have to by complicating with trying to commute with a non commutable job. Get your mind right and go for it.

If this was an easy profession, everybody would be doing it.

Good luck in your decision.

I fly for Package Express, and I am not aware of any agreement that allows us to jumpseat with anyone. My personal suggestion is to move- this company is totally worth it.

Hello,
I'd recommend that you move, or become a temporary "geo-bachelor". I am basically a "floater" right now until I get enough seniority to hold a run in Concord. However, I do know of a couple of Race City guys in a situation similar to your's. They rented a trailer for pretty low rent, and I crash with them in exchange for some chow and I'll kick in some $$$ to pay the rent.
Considering the duty rigs for the low-seniority runs I don't think that commuting other than the weekends is possible. As far as badges, we don't have them and I don't think anyone would let us ride until we get some J/S agreements in place. Most of the guys here live where the plane lives and I think that this is the norm for most 135 freight outfits.

Hey fellas! (123.17)

CitationLover (Rich?) and all!

yes I am still in ROA! Package is definitely worth moving from orlando for. I moved all the way here from SLC! I haven't regreted it one single bit! Thanks Diesel! I wasn't fortunate enuf to get skywest, but that is my fault. I went to the interview slightly unprepaired. Won't make thatmistake again. Barnyard, are you in the mood for some chocolate chip pancakes? IHOP? p.s. I almost puked at IHOP in Daytona... rotten sandwhich! Nasty place. Anyhow, sorry to gross you out. Peace
