dudes,
i'm looking at an interview in january and i've been doing a little research on ASA andi have a few questions,
1) do you think there's going to be a strike soon? i'd hate to get hired and furloughed in the same month.
2) what is the no sh+t upgrade time for a FO with descent expierence and @ 2500TT, 1500 MEL, and 500 turbine PIC?
3) is there a contract for the training?
4) will i get paid during my training?
5) do you think ASA is good career move? all things considered?

i suspect the recruiters will tell me what i want to hear to make their quota but i'm more interested in the truth.

thanks

1. I would expect contract negotiations to last at least another year and a half, so no, I wouldn't expect a strike too soon.
2. I would expect 3-4 years, but that's just a guess. Anyone with the Total Time and a seniority number high enough can upgrade, all the other stuff doesn't count.
3. I don't believe that there is a "payback" contract for training, but I'm not 100% sure about that.
4. Yes, you get paid for training, and I believe that you receive per diem as well.
5. I don't know what you consider to be a good career move. You won't know if you made the right decisions until you taxi under the water cannons. I think we're as stable as anyone else right now, and we have a bunch of great people to fly with.

The only thing I would add to ATR's reply is that as far as I understand it, the only newhires who got 24/7 per diem were those assigned DFW. Since you were in ATL for training, you got it 24/7. Now that DFW is closing, and no new hires are going to SLC, every one will be ATL based, so no per diem during training. As far as I know they get a guarantee paycheck in training. The first per diem I'd guess would be during IOE.

Here is a list of ASA's most junior captains.

ATR ATL DOH 11/13/2000

CRJ200 ATL DOH 8/31/2000

CRJ700 ATL DOH 10/25/1999

CRJ700 SLC DOH 1/4/1999

So 3-4 years is good guess by ATRDriver. You also have to take into account how fast we were growing from 99-02. We hired a bunch of pilots back then. The most junior CRJ200 ATL captain is seniority #1012. We have around 1700 pilots now, so you will be #1700+.

I wouldn't expect a 3-4 year upgrade. I'd say 5 years would be an optimistic upgrade outlook. For upgrade time to stay where it is today, there would have to be a ton of attrition or growth. I think we'll see a little of both, but defintitely not anywhere close to enough to allow a new hire to upgrade in 3-4 years. There are some FO's already here that could easily see 5-6 years for an upgrade. There are certainly worse places, but I would keep building PIC time before coming over to ASA, because it's something you won't see here for quite some time. Good luck!

I am on my third year as an FO and I am still 400 numbers from upgrade.. I am looking at a total of 7-10 years

AMEN! Upgrade is going to be awhile. With no one hiring and little growth, there will be slow movement here, however, we have a bunch of great people to fly with and I would welcome you to the crowd! We have a good time here and to echo what has been said before, we are as good as place as any!
Hope to see you online...

Well, what's the worst that could happen? They could always offer you an interview date for an FA position.

I sent my resume in, ATP and 1700 Hrs of 121 Turbine time-they offered me a FA interview.

What idiot sexist A**holes. Work for ASA, I think not, if they can't even read the F***** resume.

The last time I saw an application, it was a general employment application. Every position in the company was covered. There was a section for pilots to break down their flight time. Maybe dhc8ap should RTFQ before throwing the application away.

dhc8ap: Dude, you must have applied when we had all of the fags doing the hiring! We had more cowboys rolling through here than you can imagine! Sorry about the mix up....Socrates1 is probably right! Pay attention to the app!

How very enlightened you sound. Phukin Hillbilly.

Upgrade time can be very difficult to predict. After the 25 200's next year, that's all (at least that we know of). On the other side, if the big boys hire again, that will create lots of movement. We have lost many to Airtran in recent times and a few other airlines.

I heard we were losing 10/mo. Don't know if that was a rough average or what, or if it was skewed by the people that left because of DFW.

Honestly, they have FA's with higher time.
