Currently 22years old, flying air ambulance in a king air 200 and 90. Building multi turbine PIC. My question is do airlines need to see a large amount of total time? I will have 1500 Turbine PIC with 2700 total, not saying that is great just wondering if they want to see more total time. Currently flying 250-300 hours a year, am I hurting myself by not building more time?

For your age, you seem to have a fair amount of high-quality time. What you don't appear to have is scheduled airline time (which would also increase your total time much faster).

It'll be interesting to see what kind of advice you get here. Personally, I would suggest you try to get your ATP at your current job (can you?), and move on to a regional airline. Choose your airline carefully, though! You should spend a lot of time browsing the forums here to get a feel for what your best choices might be.

You also need to think about where you want to end up -- pax major (and which one?), freight major, fractional? Pick a direction, and try to make as many personal connections as you can -- you'll need the advice and the recommendations.

Oh, and have a Plan B.

Thanks for the response, I don't have the time yet, I will in 6 years. I appreciate the advice, I am just wondering if I am shooting myself in the foot (flying 250hrs a year). I have been so motivated, and am greatful for having a job out of college, However I eventually want to be in a position to fly corporate or for a major airline. Some say TURBINE PIC is king, some say jump ship on go sit in an RJ and build time. Just wondering what some expierenced, been there and done thats, think.

Apply early, and often to airlines of your choice. I made the mistake of spending too long at a regional because I thought I wasn't 'qualified' enough to apply to the majors. When I finally interviewed (also hired) at a major, the Captain asked, "why I waited so long to apply" My advice don't wait to apply, let them decide if your qualified enough.
 
I'd get the 1500pic turbine to cover your bases with the majors (swa, fedex, etc) that require the turbine time then I'd consider getting an airline job so you are more well rounded and get the TT up at a quicker pace.

The best advise I can give you is..... have two bank accounts and one wife - not the other way around.

Ahh -- I understand, Parrot Head. You're projecting your time forward. In which case, 250-300 hours a year ... I don't know -- tough call. It's PIC, but not a lot of it. You probably need to build time faster, and at a scheduled pax or freight operation (although you'll need 135 mins for freight).

Jetjockey's advice is good; you'll probably get lots more good advice in the next day or two. I always tell people to look at the experience (both in kind, and in hours) of newhires at the target carriers -- and then go do what it takes to get the same. You probably can get hired at your preferred airline coming from the job you described above -- but that would not be the typical route.

good stuff

Good stuff, appreciate all of the input. The schedule and QOL is excellent where I work, It's just not a time builder. Salary is good, however my goal is Frontier, SWA, CAL, FEDex, or anything other place that has great QOL and great pay.

So I will stick it out for 5 years, get 1300-1500 Turbine PIC then see how the market is for us pilots.

Anyone ever thought about a stock symbol ticker for us, since our value can change daily it seems.
 
Dude, you'll have 1500 PIC Turbine in 6 years? That's waaaay to long to build that kind of time.
Get a couple of hundred PIC Turbine where you're at and find another king air charter gig that flies your arse off at 80 hours a month; then, when you have about 2000 PIC Turbine, go to Spirit or something like that for about a year or 2, then go to SWA. If you play it right, this could only take you 4 years or less AND you'll have 121 experience. DONT GO TO A REGIONAL. THATS THE WORST ADVICE ON THIS THREAD.
Bottom line, use this job your at to get king air experience so someone else will hire you as a captain in the king air. Where do you live?

The first part of that is good advice, but why not go to a regional?
 
Freight = turbine PIC, and lots of it. Just sayin'. The trick is knowing when to move on.
