Just got my CFI a few months ago, and was wondering if some of you guys could "spell out" how to give a little instrument training to my dad who is working on his rating, by me only having a flight intructor rating without instrument instruction privelages? Just wondering if there is a loophole with only having the CFI vs. II, and giving a little help with the approaches/ any insight would be appreciated.

Only the last fifteen hours of flight instruction for the instrument rating have to be with an authorized intsructor, meaning a CFII. Look at 61.65d (2). With a CFI you are allowed to do instrument work with students, you just can't sign the person off for an instrument checkride. You have to give initial private pilots basic attitude instrument flight training anyways (61.109 a 3), so with a CFI so are allowed to teach instrument work. You could do all the training up to the point of the final fifteen hours where the student is required to fly with an authorized instructor. Go ahead and do the training. Why not. More hours in the logbook and more experience.

Except for maybe some very minor technicalities mainha's answer (like nothing says that the "last" 15 hours has to be with a CFII) is correct.

The one thing you may want to watch out for is making sure that the instrument "dual" you do doesn't get totalled into the "instrument training" that gets counted toward the rating when that 8710 eventually gets filled out.

As the FAA sees it, a one-I cannot give "instrument training" that "counts" toward currency, a certificate or rating. That is the province of the double-I. Beyond that, there's no prohibition on a one-I giving instruction on flight by instrument reference or on instrument flight procedures.

in addition to the 15hrs of training the 3 hours of prep need to also be done by an authorized (CFII) instructor. it's grey as to whether or not the 3 is included in the 15 or not.
