I'm a private pilot, so this question is only out of interest. FedEx seems to fly into MEM (or other hubs) in the evening, then after the sort (I presume) departs out of MEM for the outbound push. Looking at Flight Explorer, there seems to be 3-4 hours at MEM (must be quite a sight when all the birds are there).
What do pilots do during this layover? Is there a shift change (which I could understand at that time of night), or what does happen to the crews?
I note that many FedEx aircraft are airborn again during the day- maybe the USPS contract? How do these ops integrate into the night-time flying, from a crew scheduling perspective?
Thanks, this is a great board with lots of interesting info.
