Question for UPS pilots?

I am furloughed from a major and will be starting my second job throwing boxes for UPS in Indianapolis. I picked up this job to help my family get the bills paid.

Do any of you know if this job might boost my chances of hiring on as a pilot for UPS?

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but any insight will be appreciated.

The latest that I've heard from our HR people is that when we do resume hiring we will not consider anyone who is currently on furlough, even if they say they have or will resign their seniority number. Seems that during the last downturn UPS got burned by furloughees who left to go back after either telling UPS that they resigned their number or would not go back to their previous airline. I also have heard the rumor that HR will not consider anyone who did not have their resume on file prior to 9-11.

The HR rep I spoke to told me that right after 9-11 they saw a great increase in the number of resumes submitted. They see it like this, you were not interested in UPS before 9-11 when the airline industry was doing good, now all of a sudden you want to work here when times are tough, why weren't you interested in UPS before 9-11? They said that they have an ample supply of applicants who had their apps in before 9-11 to choose from when they do resume hiring.

Sorry to hear that you (and many others) are furloughed.

I worked for UPS in a sort center loading and unloading trucks while I was in college (3 years). During my UPS interview it seemed to me that they were impressed that I had worked for them in the past and wanted to work for them again.

Not that anyone on this thread can change the HR's view, but people were interested in UPS prior to 9-11, but I were still 2 or 3 years from being able to separate from the military. So they think because my an application wasn't in before 9-11 that these folks are not serious contender. I truely hope that this is not the case.

flybrowntails, so they did hire you even though you threw boxes for them?

I have a friend at work who's father is a CA on the 747 for UPS, and I asked him if that would help him get on, he told me that UPS greatly discourages a father/son relationship when it comes to hiring, he told me that they wouldn't even hire him to through boxes just because his father works for the company.........what do you have to say about that, true?

I can not comment on the situation you mentioned. There may be information I don't know so I would not want to give you information that could be incorrect.

I do know that UPS has a nepotism rule.

UPS has a strict anti-Nepotism policy. Until my father reitres from the Corporate Offices, I can't even throw a box.
