Question for the JetBlue guys here...

I had a JB captain jumpseat on my airplane the other day. In our short conversation, he told me that the mins have been changed and that the company is in the process of changing the way applicants are compared against each other, i.e. regional guys vs. regional guys, military guys to military guys, etc. Do any of you JB guys have any further info on this? JB sure looks like a place that I'd like to be someday...I just don't think that my time is anywhere near competitive yet. Thanks in advance for the information.

I haven't heard anything like that, but I will surely look into it and try to let you guys know. By the way, do you have your app online? I would do it if you meet the mins, and hope for the best.

Thanks guys. I meet all of the mins except the 1000 hrs over 20000 lbs. I'm only about 100 hrs shy so I should hit the mark sometime next month. I think I should probably wait until I have that 1000 to apply, correct?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I plan on applying as soon as I hit that 1000 hr mark. One other question...is the website correct in saying 12-18 month upgrade to captain? Seems pretty quick to me these days.

That's a pretty accurate timeframe, assuming you are ready for the upgrade. A lot of pilots wait to upgrade until they can hold a better schedule. Some just want a little more time on the line before heading down the trail to Miami.

113 per hour up to 70 hours. Time and a half for everything above 70 hours for captains. I think FO's are arond 51 per hour up to 70 hours, time and a half above 70 hours. Average captains lines are around 80-85 hours, with opentime usually available.

This has been asked and answered many times before. In a word, no. The LORs are not even looked at until AFTER the interviews. No good ole' boy network. The selection for interviews is done strictly based on qualifications you post with your online application.


I asked Dean if there were any efforts to change the selection mix. He said no. The process of interview selection is not changing.

The mins did change slightly a few months ago. (That might have caused the confusion.) We no longer have the 1000 hrs turbine PIC requirement. The current mins are:

1500 hours total time in airplanes (excluded: Helo, Sim, F/E time)
1000 hours turbine in airplanes
1000 hours PIC
1000 hours in airplanes over 20,000 pounds (max take off weight)

The reason for splitting turbine and PIC was to allow highly qualified FOs, who may have tons of experience in the right seat of an airliner but who never got the opportunity to move to the left seat in a turbine airplane, the opportunity to apply. Again, these are simply the minimums. The pool of 4,200+ apps is culled every two months for the 60 best qualified people with a VARIETY of backgrounds. Good luck!

Does anyone know how many pilots are on military leave from Jetblue?

Is this why the Captain upgrade is 12-18 months? Could it be longer when these folks return?

I would be hopeful this estimate holds up, because f/o pay doesn't seem to increase much with longevity.
Please post pay scales for 2nd, & 3rd year f/o. This could be a reality with the industry changing daily.

Can you obtain a JFK parking pass while in training?

Do you receive an ID at the beginning of training, enabling jumpseat privledges with other carriers?

Exactly what is the time breakdown for training.
Indoc., systems, sim., and IOE.

About 30 or so on mil leave.

Upgrade slowed down due to an initial thought of 1 aircraft per month being delivered. We're now taking 2 a month and have increased our training numbers. Upgrades continue to be around the 13 month point and will do so in the future.

We all get id's right away and you can jumpseat immediately. Additionally, your family can start traveling in 10 days.

I don't have my laptop open right now to tell you what the training manual says for the breakdown of hours.

However, the first 10 days are indoc (instrument refresher, safety class, etc.). You have 3 weeks of sims (during which you're also required to self study the VAC B computer program that discusses the systems). If I remember correctly (it's been a year), you have 5 normal sims rides, 5 emergency sim rides, a checkride, a loft training ride a loft eval ride.

IOE is 25 hours.

The stock options are still being issued, but I'm not certain for how much longer. You are vested fully by 7 years. I think the first year is 10% and then increases in increments.

We have a Personal Time Off (PTO) allotment each month. You use that for sick time, vacation, trip drops, whatever. It's roughly 9 hours a month. Use at your discretion type of thing.

Ah, the pay I think increases by maybe a couple of dollars. Again, I don't have my laptop out to confirm that.

F/O pay for first 70 hours, time and a half after... Most F/Os are flying on average 81-85 hours/mo.

1 YR $50.96
2 YR $56.19
3 YR $61.42
4 YR $66.66
5 YR $71.90 + 1.1% through year 10

but in reality, you're not likely to see anyone as a 5yr F/O in this upstart for a while-- maybe 2-3 years at most as an F/O for now.

In a jumpseat conversation I had with a company Exec (I don't want to quote someone off the record) I was told that the options are a permanent part of the business plan. I was surprised by that.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I got an email from Jetblue that said line pilots can give internal letters of recommendation and that this would help with the selection process. I recieved this just recently so I thought that the process got changed already. I think I've been inhaling too much of this northeast smog. Anyways...... please clue me in, if Ive been reading too much into this process. Thanks in advance........
