To all,
I frequently ride as a passenger on your aircraft and was hoping one of you can answer a question. What exactly is that drilling noise that occurs during engine shut down at the gate? Kind of sounds like noise heard at your local auto shop.
thanks

They say it's the PTU, but I've sat back there as well and am certain it is my dog 'Pooky-Nuts' barking in the aft cargo.

Airbus noises

The thing your are hearing is the PTU, or Power Transfer Unit.

It works when an engine is shut down or any other time power is required from one operating hydraulic system to the other.

It utilitzes a motor pump unit, similar to the design idea on the DC-9, MD-80, to transfer hydraulic power from one system to the other without the transfer of any hydraulic fluid.

The same sounds eminate from the DC/MD aircraft with one engine shut down but it sounds much different.
