In the history of contract negotiations w/ your management; how long have you all ever gone past the amenable date?

Looking for fuel to counter our management at US...they say they are trying to emulate SWA as the gold standard of how employees are treated....

What US meant was that they literally want to be a low cost carrier as it relates to employees pay. LOL

I had a manager (CP) tell me that one time while we briefly discussed airline economics. I said don't bother using them. He asked why. I said SWA is and HAS BEEN more than pay, a contract, or quick turns. SWA is a culture, and until our MBAs can UNDERSTAND that trying to emulate them will only bring failure.

To prove my point, take a look at the bonuses the SWA management tram recently recieved. Small in comparision to the legacy carriers, however they SWA based their bonuses on operational performance. Not stock prices, or correlation to industry peers.

Somebody who's been with SWA awhile will have to answer this one. Most of us (like 70%) have been hired since our last contract in '94.

Cheers

Thanks for the input.... the current contract...I take it that it has in it a cost of living increase per year??

The "current" contract expired last September. There are no more raises because we are past the ammendable date. I'm not holding my breath. We just switched from IBB to traiditional type negotiations. I'd guess we're an easy year away from signing anything. I may be the minority but I think we deserve a raise AND retro pay.

Not the minority, but the well educated.

RETRO!!!

Concur.

It has longevity increases, not COL increases.

Semantics. For us not-so-smart-folks an annual raise of a few percent kinda is like a COLA raise. More money for doing the same job one year longer. Ask any Legacy driver on here how "Max pay til the last day" worked out.

Off the mark on this one burger.

Longevity and COLA raises are completely different issues.

Keeping the value of ones pay is far from "Max Pay till..." mantras.

Guys like you scare me a bit. Please get educated.

Are you talking about your longevity raise or the profitability raises (which have ended)?

The "current" contract expired last September.

Under the Railway Labor Act...contracts never expire...they just become "amendable" on a certain date.

Right now, we are working on some provisions of the contract...."amended"

As the polling has shown, pay is not an issue for the SWA Pilots right now.

There is no public poll, only the Wilson Group info that has been used by the Negotiating Committee. Believe me, COLA+ is a minimum, or we're going backwards.

Tejas. Bro. Between you and Burger I'm wondering just what you think you're worth?

We deserve a raise. Gary Kelly just got a 25% raise and over 200k in bonuses.......... and you don't think you're worth one?

I just don't get it. If you have the time I'd like for you two to explain why you don't think we deserve more annual compensation.

Thanks in advance,
Gup

You're right....the data from the Wilson Polling Group has indicated that $ is not at the forefront for the SWA pilots right now.

Oh sure...I can see some COLA....but "+"? Nahhhh... don't think thats gonna happen.

Being a member of the silent majority, I was about to add some of my rather extraordinary thoughts to this conversation.....instead, I've decided to keep my extraordinary thoughts in house....

I agree Prussian. I got outta hand airing in public. My last words "in public" on this will just be that it baffles me when people see huge raises at the exec level and then don't think we are deserving as well. Mr. Kelly is a smart man and the right man for today. He wouldn't look nearly as genius without outstanding, hard-working employees doing the heavy lifting.

Ciao (and thanks for the reminder),

Hello Southwest Pilots
I am very interested in a future career as a Southwest Pilot. I know the competition is high and it is difficult to get hired. However I feel I can bring some good qualities to your airline. I spent 15 years in the hospitality business, currently hold just under 5000 TT, over 3000 Turbine BE1900D with 1340 Turbine BE1900D PIC/Check airman. I do not have jet time, but I do have the attitude that SWA look for. Having flown in the NE corridor in the worst wx for the past 3 years was the toughest flying I will ever do/
I would really appreciate any advice from current SWA pilots on what I can do best to increase my opportunity to work along side you SW pilots. Thank you for your help and fly safe.

You don't need it to apply, but getting the type would help a bunch. It would put you in the short stack and show you have motivation and determination to work at SWA.

Keep doing what you are doing (flying), update every month, and if you can swing it financially, get the type too. It should get you called a lot faster than if you don't have it. I would also recommend going to an Air, Inc. convention (did I really just say that?!?!) or attending an open house either at SWA or at one of the type rating schools. I know FTI has one coming up soon, see the ad at the top of this page. FTI is where I got my rating, and they were excellent. They happen to also be the most competitive from a price standpoint.

Good luck!

If anyone deserves a raise, its the guys who hustle and found a way to be productive and profitable in these tough times.

Outside looking in, I see a potential jr/sr rift as senior guys want to preserve STOCK PRICE, while junior guys want better wages. Age 60 issues will only throw fuel on that fire.

Good luck guys--keep the bar high.

Does anybody else think there's been a paradigm shift in how pilots view their worth over the past 15 years or so? Back in the day pilots made great money and didn't apologize for it. Now the majority don't seem to believe we deserve white collar salaries or we have to kill ourselves with productivity in order to make them. Hell longeshoremen make 150k/year these days.....In the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and even in the 90's pilot salaries were right there with management. Now we're not even close. Unfortunately there are too few that share Guppy's opinion... I wish you all the best of luck getting a well deserved raise. I hope you give Alpa something to shoot for....
