A - ASTAR Air Cargo: 0/9/0. Hiring 1 in SEP. Accepting résumés by mail, email at [email protected], or fax to (859) 905-1512. All pilots hired as second-in-command...

Hiring 1? Any word on that?

From AirInc.
Dunno. Haven't heard about it. I can't see them running a class for one.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did hire, though.

Not bad

Yeah. That's pretty good. A lot less intense than Evergreen schedule. I'm a west coast guy and I didn't want any part of the schedule I was hearing.

Yeah, I might bid some of the shuttle lines in Nov and Dec to work around vacation in November and Christmas. It's certainly nice to spend a week away from the nightly hub-turns.

If you're an F/O LJ, I heard that Fuhrman is going to start bidding those trips too! Have fun!!!

Well, there's plenty of them to go around. The October bid package has 30 shuttle lines including those new shuttle trips plus the ones we had before.

Furhman actually likes flying with me for some reason... Oh, well...

Knock on wood, but last due to the construction on the A ramp in ILN with the resulting movement of several aircraft parking spots, ABX misloaded the DEN and BFI 767s. Maybe good news for Astar? ABX is trying to explain it's way out of this to DHL. Evidently they are trying to partially blame the crews for not verfying the destination of their volume with the loadmaster when they brought the w/b tape.

Also heard that during the hurricane several F/Os called in requesting personal days. They called seperate chief pilots and each one individually granted them leave, but failed to coordinate with scheduling who was left to fly the trips out of MIA after the storm passed. They ended up having to cancel a charter out of MIA because all the F/Os were on peronal leave. Heard that big Bob went ballistic on the chief pilots over this one.

Don't let anyone fool ya. I'm a very senior F/O at UPS and I gotta tell you that's a great schedule. I'd love to fly something like that.

Actaully, those shuttle trips are pretty good, especially for our guys who live on the West Coast. Each trip lays over at PDX, LAX and BOI with most of the layovers being between 23hrs and 36hrs. Once per week the BOI layover is 82 hours.

All of the trips start and end with a deadhead on the 767 to/from PDX or LAX. The only short layovers are the layovers in PDX immediately before and after the 767 deadhead legs. Those layovers are just over 10 hours.

Here's one example trip which is an eight day trip which flies 13.29 block time that would pay 43.9 hours if flown as open flying or vacation buy back. (You can look up the pay rates on the excellent airline pilots pay web site)

WE DH767 ILN-PDX 0436-0613 10:33 Layover 6:07 Duty
WE PDX-BFI-SFO-LAX 1816-0048 23:25 Layover 8:02 Duty
FR LAX-SLC-BOI 0143-0745 81:45 Layover 6:32 Duty
MO BOI-SLC-LAX 1900-2339 23:51 Layover 7:09 Duty
WE LAX-SFO-BFI-PDX 0100-0709 10:11 Layover 7:39 Duty
WE DH767 PDX-ILN

Do that trip twice in a 31 day month and you're done for the month after flying only 26:58 block time. On a 30 day month you couldn't do that trip twice as we only work 15 days in a 30 day month.

It wasn't as bad as it sounded. It was the day flights on Thursday which were carrying second day freight due for delivery Friday. They sent a recovery to move the freight back and forth between BFI and DEN Thursday night so it was all in place by Friday morning for delivery. The extra airplane and crew then got used to cover a mechanical on Friday night's system.

It wasn't that complicated. Only one cheif pilot was involved. There was some confusion as to the days that the pilot needed off which is how they ended up running out of crews. A charter was delayed, not cancelled. The MIA charters have had a lot of disruptions for the past couple of weeks due to the hurricanes. None of that is DHL freight.
