Hey everyone,

Got a few questions for any FO's or new hires who are based in San Juan. I did a quick search and didn't find anything specific on San Juan so I figured i'd throw this thread out. Anyways, I might have an opportunity for an interview with Eagle and since it seems like San Juan is the place to be for junior bids I was just wondering about what the QOL is like at San Juan? How's reserve duty there? And I know this is the question everyone laughs at but is there any hope for upgrades within 3-5 years if you decide to say in San Juan? Anyways thanks in advance for the help, assuming I don't get flamed to death on this that is.

from what i've been hearing LAX Saab FO might be going junior to SJU ATR. there was a displacement bid though recently w/ an opening for 5 ATR FO slots.

AE at SJU

I flew the SD3-60 for AE from 1994-1996 out of SJU and liked it a lot, but I speak fluent Spanish and have lived abroad before.

I chose to rent a house just South of the touch down marker on rwy 10, instead of an apartment on the beach. The guys that rented on the beach had less room, were on the "hot sheets" plan, and didn't have cars. If you go down there get a car. Some of the pilots got robbed on the bus going to work.

I used to spend a lot of time surfing and diving on the West end of the island. The dive club on the Reamy base (BQN) was only $25 a year for 24/7 access to the compressor to refill tanks. "Gas Chambers" and "Shacks" have some of the best shore diving I have yet to see. You can be at the top of the rain forest in 45 minutes from SJU.

If you have a family, the commute can be tough. I've been married 17 years now, but didn't have any children when I was in SJU. My wife and I would alternate the commute, depending on which location would provide the most time together.

If LAX is available, it would probably be easier on you commute-wise, etc., but I would consider SJU. If you invest a little more in a car, own bed, some water toys, etc. it can be fun.

pool with a rumor of classes staring up again in spring.

I would think with the additional AA flowbacks and aircraft deliveries slowing, future classes would be near year end at the earliest.

San Juan Rocks!! I've been there for 10 months now and it has been a paid Vacation!! If you are single and like the beach and cheap drinks, then this is the place for you! There are a lot of people that talk $h!+ about SJU but the area is great. Im still enjoying the bus for 25 cents, but a car would definately be a plus, but you'll meet people with cars and renting is like 30 buck a day if you need to hit up walmart or head out to Rincon!! Ya surfing and diving are great all over, plus you can run to someother exotic caribbean island if you get bored
The operation is ok, everywhere has its issues and problems i guess , but it runs. I got in in the beginning of the hiring boom, so I moved up quick but you might spend a while on the bottom, its not too bad, 2 hour call out, nearly all VFR type flying.

Upgrade in 3-5 years, not unless someone starts knockin off captains! It might be PR but its still one list for the upgrades, I think our most junior displaced captains are early to mid 99 DOH. So enjoy the sun and not having to sign for the plane for a while.

Good luck; remember its as good as you want to make it PM me if you need more info

My friend who just interviewed with them last week was told that they were gathering a pool for a future date something this spring/summer. So he says anyways.

Thanks for the info Jeff and Aerosurfer! That's pretty much what I was looking for. Being single and young I figured SJU would be a great place to live for a few years while I have the opportunity. Especially since I recently did some island hopping through the Bahamas in a duchess last month. And obviously it'd be nice if there were good upgrade times but I doubt I would find that anywhere other than at Lakes. Which is also an option but i'm not sure how much longer I can afford to live off less than 15/yr with my student/flying loans hanging over me.
