What is the deal with these psych exams? The Reid Report is one of em, or in this case Bay State Psychological Associates online test. 81 True/False statments. The thing is driving my out of my mind.

Sometimes I get edgy T/F ......Well this bloody test is making me edgy, so how should I answer?

Sometimes my ideas about things change quickly for no apparent reason. T/F......Just who is it that they're trying to weed out with this one?

I feel tired in the morning T/F.......Who doesn't? But one doesn't want to sound like a depressed zombie, so again, how do you answer?

I don't like to use guns T/F.......Besides being politically charged, how the fark is it your business? It's legal! The 20 shoplifting questions I can deal with, but this is lame.

I enjoy spending time with people I've met in bars T/F.......Where does one start? Should i not have been in a bar in the first place? Are bar folk not worthy of association? Have I screwed myself because I just said I don't like to go to bars?

I like to daydream T/F.......It's not that one likes or doesn't like to daydream, it's just the minds way of utilizing empty capacity. How is this a question? They could just as easily say "Do you like to urinate?" Frankly I haven't formed much of an opinion on the subject, but I am motivated to do so every few hours nonetheless.

So all you brain surgeons out there, just how is all this suposed to work, and how does it help an employer? Even If I did shoplift, I could still formulate a consistent response that would lead an examiner to believe otherwise. My tired mind does not get it!

Honesty

What these psych exams are really looking for is honest non deceptive responses Many of them ask the same questions over and over again in differing ways
I took a few for Law Enforcement jobs I have /had which were the same These are some questions on the MMPI ( Minnesota Multiphasic personality inventory) :
Check out this site

http://www.pearsonassessments.com/assessments/tests/mmpi_2.htm

T/F I want to hunt Lions in Africa
T/F I love my mother more than my father
T/F I sometimes have thoughts I would never want anyone to know about .
Oh yes and I was asked to draw a picture of a "Happy house"
Having windows and a chimney with smoke coming from it is a "Happy House" from what Ive heard .

Honesty is the best policy Usually if you red flag a test like this you get a sit down with a shrink but I do not know many who fail such exams Good luck and relax! Chas

T/F I love my mother more than my father

Holy cripes...what the hell kind of question is that!? I don't know HOW I'd answer that one. I guess just flip a coin.

Believe it or not

99% say Mom and thats generally normal even for those guys who consider themselves macho . Mom is mom! Chas

That is a surprise. I would have though most people loved their parents equally, or would have at least answered as if they did.

I can remember, from a few years back, a shrink was ruining careers right and left, diagnosing everyone he saw with some type of mental disease. Turns out, he was the nut. He tried to go flying out the 14th floor office...true story! Many got their jobs back, but with some trouble and major money.

And how about if you really don't like your mom, or you like your dad so much better, will that be the end of your career.
I want to now what this bay state company is up too. A few month back nobody had heard of them, and now every small airline you want to apply for is charging $38.- to go to them for a psych test. As far as I see it it's just a clever marketing scheme from these guys or is it an undercover act from uncle sam (see the gun question- you like a gun and as such you might be danger to aviation, you have shoplifted and as such an unstable personality, also dangerous to aviation. Or the bar question:you frequent bars, so you might fly drunk: dangerous. You don't go to a bar, what are you thinking about all by yourself ? And what about the 5 am and being tired? Yes, as a freight dog the end of my workday is approaching, and as a commuter guy you just had about 5 hours of sleep out of your 8 or 9 hour rest period and that's the third night like that. Am I allowed to be tired or what????)
I guess I'm daydreaming now, oh wait , it's 0117, I'm getting sleepy.
So what's the deal with bay state?????

DOD brought in some mental health professionals to do some evaluations of a number of members in the Army Spec Ops community. After a 6-month period of evaluations of various personnel, the results of the study concluded, among other things, that most of the soldiers evaluated posessed similar character and personality traits as those observed in similar studies administered by professionals to 'career' criminals at several prisons. Apparently the key element that differentiated the soldiers from the criminals - impulse control! I think I will go buy a new car now. :D

It's often not so much the answers as the consistency of your answers - and how you perform under stress. Because if a bunch of badly worded questions like that isn't stressfull in the face of employment/sanity check, what is?

Most shrinks go into psychology to try to fix themselves. It doesn't work.

Cardinal,

The first words of the question are very important.
For example:

I always... or I never.... :How many things are there that you always or never do?

I occasionally..... or sometimes I ......: Unless it is something way out in left field, this may be true a good number of times, if you are honest.

With the rest, I know its frustrating because you wish you could give an explanation with your answers but you just have to be honest and not try to second or third guess what "they" (the evil shinks) may be looking for.

My favorite Psych Test questions I have had to answer:

1. T/F I have been possesed by evil spirits before.
2. T/F I enjoy hurting small animals.
3. T/F I secretly wish I was the opposite sex.
4. T/F I frequently cough blood.

   what a test!!!
