If you do come to PSA remember a few things:

2. Commuting makes life 5 times harder. I did it for two and a half years and when I moved to base the improvement was unbelievable. It is also a choice you make. Nobody held a gun to my head. If you commute you have no right to b!tch about buying hotels and so forth. How many jobs out there even give you that option in the first place? As far as the bases moving all the time...this isn't the only industry where people get transferred. You know that going into it so deal with it or go work somewhere that you know will never move you.

When CLT closes and we get a new base in D.C or Pittsburg i am sure you will just sell you house and move right?

If I had a pressing reason to stay in CLT then I would make the CHOICE to commute and live with it. I'm not any more enthusiastic about moving than anyone else, in fact it ranks with my least favorite activity in the world after paying bills, but I hate commuting and don't want to do it again. Again, a choice you have to make.

All I am saying is that it's not like it's a big surprise that it can happen like that in this job. It's always been that way. Some flexibility in life is necessary if you don't want to deal with certain downfalls this career can offer. B!tching and moaning about it wont make it go away.

When CLT closes?!?!?!? Bite your tounge man! Don't ever say such horrible things. BTW. 15 days off with the blend. It will never happen again.

I'm seriously considering PSA right now. Timing might be good with the J4J recalls and all. I live in AVL which is a 2 hour drive from either CLT or TYS. If I didn't want to pay for a hotel maybe I could just drive the commute. Round trip would cost about the same in gas though.

I own a sweet home up in the mountains here and my wife and I love it and are in no rush to relocate. I have a service industry side job at the Biltmore Estate that is VERY flexible on scheduling and pays well.

So, I'm thinking of airlines I could commute to out of AVL or make a drive for while I tough out the bad pay and QOL issues while falling back on my side job. Once I have some seniority and better pay then I could relocate to either CLT or TYS. I might like Knoxville more than CLT though 'cause I could get another house up in the hills there.

Anyway, am I out of my mind here or would this work? Would there be any advantage to driving the commute (AVL to either TYS or CLT) rather than trying to jump seat? I'm pretty sure PSA doesn't fly into AVL.

First of all, good luck in whatever you choose.

Secondly, there are a few flights daily (3?) from AVL to CLT. It's usually a mix of CRJ and DH8. PSA does do them sometimes. Plus you could drive if you had to.

Do what's best for you and your family and don't take advice from people on FI!!!

April schedule has 8 flights a day each way between AVL and CLT. First one out of AVL is at 6am and the last is at 6pm. Going the other way the first one out of CLT is at 10am and the last is at 10pm. That's pretty good commuting. The one downside may be that there are some senior Mainline captains that live up in the mountains as well.

Just don't expect $$$ or time off. Or any kind of QOL on the road.

So I guess money really doesn't matter to you since you can move around and buy houses right? Hell what do you have to lose? If it doesn't work out just quit and fly your banners.

If you are TYS based then you would want to drive it most of the time. Most origionators start before the first flight arrives from CLT and most finish after the last flight has left. I used to drive from CLT to TYS about half the time when I was based in TYS siting reserve awaiting my CLT bid. Reserve time in TYS is a LOT shorter than CLT as well!!!!!

Ummm yeah Jetpipe..... I've got a response.......WHAT?!

I just rolled into town 2 nights ago from towing S. FL.
I'm so freakin poor right now I can't even swing by the gas station to pick up a 6 pack of Coors Light! This past year I've either been up in NJ or down in FL towing banners sending ALL my money back home to my wife TRYING to cover our mortgage and bills. Living the couch surfing / homeless lifestyle for 7 months has been grrrrrreat let me tell ya!! Not to mention living off of Wendy's, Burger King, and McDonald's $1 value menu once maybe twice a day.:puke:

Hopefully I'll get my feet back on the ground the day after easter when I'm cleared to start picking up some shifts back at the Biltmore Estate.

Thanks Stuka, Nethan, and Wanabe. Great info. I'm surprised to hear it. I had no idea PSA was coming through AVL. It's been a while since I've flown around here but back when I was instructing at AVL all I remember was AWAC and PDT flying USAir Express routes.

Now here's an issue, I only have 30 multi. 19 is jet SIC and 11 piston PIC. Would pursuing PSA be hopeless with only 30 multi?

Nah, theres hope. There were people hired here with less than 1000TT.

Glad to help and just remember, let THEM tell you no, don't disqualify yourself without even trying.

Good luck! :)

mcjohn,
Good luck applying to PSA. It isn't as bad as some people say. Two hour drive or a one leg commute isn't too bad. If you don't mind early mornings then TYS would be a really good deal for you. You could be a line holder in a couple of months if the high turnover rate for TYS FOs continues. If you are going to commute by car, I would stay away from CLT. Nothing is worse than commuting to sit hot reserve.

BTW, Did you ever work at the FBO in AVL?

If I was you I would consider Air Midwest (Mesa) and here is why. You WILL upgrade VERY quickly and that means you'll get your PIC and move on past the regional level that much quicker. I know its Mesa but just do some searching on here about the QOL and upgrades at PSA. I know they are saying more upgrades here now but I wouldn't plan on that for one second. Air Midwest have several bases close to you that are within an easy commuting distance. Good luck to you. Whatever you decide just make sure its whats best for your family.

Thanks ya'll. I never worked for the FBO at AVL but I did work in there up stairs at WNC Aviation for a short time. I did most of my instructing out of Hendersonville Airport just underneath AVL's RWY 34 approach. The other instructors that were at AVL with me are both at PDT now.

Mamba why the Air Midwest branch of Mesa? Is there a way to specify when applying? Is the equipment non jet? If I go non-jet then I would like to be set up for a fast upgrade for sure. I've been thinking, if I were to fly a 1900 or something then Big Sky would be the place to go rather than Mesa. Thoughts?

Air Midwest is owned by Mesa.

Not sure if there is a different way of applying you might want to check it out. They fly 1900's and I see them all the time in CLT. I was just thinking that it would offer a fast upgrade probably close to home for you as opposed to commuting to Montana for Big Sky.
