When calculating p.a. we set 29.92 and read directly off the alt.someone told me you then subtract the field elevation to get the correct figure i do not remember being shown this, it does not sound right.
 
He obviously never has flown above 18,000.

P A is what you read with the altimeter set to 2992.

Altitude above field elevation, if I'm not mistaken, is absolute altitude.
