Was always curious how do they make decisions on who will fly the President around? I would assume it would be a job you apply for (never in the military so not sure how things work). Just a curiosity question.

Alot of A$$ kissing is what I would imagine for an assignment that good! Too high profile for my liking but I'm sure it has its' perks.

You must meet certain minimums to apply. Then, you must volunteer and get selected to the 89th (they fly US senior leadership--civilian and military)thru an interview process. Presidential pilots are then selected from 89th pilots after they have been there for awhile.

Let's not forget that Marines fly the president around as well. HMX-1 flys CH-53's. When I was in Quantico we had a captain who had been selected for HMX-1. He made it sound like selection for such a gig was based on timing, proficiency, and like anything else, a desire to do it.

the primary Presidential helicopter at HMX-1 is a VH-60

Back in 1990 or so, I was stationed in Hawaii with the Army. We had to haul the VP around for 2 weeks while he was there on vacation. Our callsign was Army Two during that time. One of the Secret Squirrels left a NICE Banana Republic vest (hunting vest) tucked in the storage compartment in one of the seats. Still have it. Don't know if the BDE Commander selected the crewmembers of how that came about.
