Five years ago I was convicted of possession of stolen property (worth $250).

This morning San juan security impounded my i.d. and I'm grounded until I get the police report forwarded from California.

The FBI report didn't mention if my crime was a misdemeanor or felony. It seems harsh to me to ground someone for possessing a $250 stolen property five years ago.

Does it matter if my conviction was a misdemeanor and not a felony ?

I had a first offense and got what's called diversion - where it's basically dropped.

two deputies asked to come on my boat. If i knew what i was doing i would've said no (as in i have a marijuana cigarette butt on board, etc).

they cane on board and found a small stolen item
- my life's ruined?

Use google to find individual department websites. The $250/day figure may or may not be accurate. In major cities on the coasts expect to make $38,000 your first year. Smaller departments pay closer to mid $20's. If you want to fly for a department expect to spend 3-5 years on the street before you are even eligible to apply for a pilot slot. Many departments are somewhat political in the manner in which they choose their pilots but pay well once you get there. The 2 CA departments I have personal contacts with (LAPD, CHP) pay their pilots in the $80,000 range. Keep in mind that all these numbers are estimates, college and prior military service can change those numbers. Also, expect to spend 6 months to a year in the hiring process. I was in LAPD's process for 18 months before I got hired by CHP after 13 months. Tough, often unappreciated work but a chance to do some really interesting things. Good luck.
