I use the plantronics headset. It does a wonderful job. The primary drawback is that it only goes in one ear. Some people have no trouble with that, but for those of us with a little (or more) hearing loss, hearing with both ears helps even more. I've found that the headset as it comes needs some enhancement; the moulded earpiece is a big step in the right direction. Wearing an earplug on the other side helps a bit, too.
I fly with someone who doesn't like the moulded earpiece, and just uses a regular foam earplug. He cuts the hose off the earpiece, and threads it through the plug, then sets the plug in his ear. It is more comfortable for him, and blocks any interfering noise. He seems to like it that way.
I believe you can get the plantronics for much better than what Sporty's is offering, however.
Try the following URL's for some more information. The first is a site that talks about hearing loss in the cockpit.
You can also try the airline historical society. They have a big stash of plantronics headsets that are used (buy your own extra earpiece) for a few bucks...I keep an extra as a spare just in case.
i enjoy the use of a plantronic headset in a variety of aircraft. personally, i don't mind trading anr capability for the lighter weight. the only drawback with the model that clips to a headband or eye glasses is that your glasses must have a rather thick frame. i wear a wire rim type pair and was able to order an adapter of sorts to provide a more secure fit for the ear piece. good product though.
