Since the person in question was 24, her mom did not have the legal right to make here do anything against her wishes. All mom could have done was petition the state or local government to institutionalize her daughter. Maybe she should have done this, or maybe she already tried. Harmless crazies can't be institutionalized against their will....where do you think all of our homeless come from.
There have been cases of astranged lovers and such trying to institutionalize their ex-mates and such. Its probably for good reason thats it's tough to get someone sent into the funny farm.
The tough part about this one is that the airline is in a no win situation. The girl tries to light her bag on fire in the lav, the flight attendant does a GREAT job and gets things under control, and at the end of the day your left with a mentally ill girl that got roughed up on an airplane. Its the same as the guy who tried to run off the plane in Miami and was shot by the Marshalls. He was off his meds too. No one will recall that the guy claimed to have a bomb and was making threats and ran at the officers; they just remember the tragic outcome.
Its sad really, good people doing a tough job and getting fingered at for judgement after the fact. I hate the media.
