Plane makes crash landing on highway

DUANESBURG, N.Y. A small plane carrying sky-divers developed engine troubles and made a crash landing on a highway this morning in Schenectady County.

The pilot and four passengers were taken to nearby hospitals.

State Police say the Cessna took off from a sky-diving center in rural Duanesburg, 18 miles west of Albany. The engine was running rough, and the pilot decided to try to land on Route 7.

Police say the plane made contact with a vehicle, but the car's driver wasn't hurt. The plane then struck an embankment.

The pilot, 27-year-old Robert Tuttle of Latham, was taken to Albany Medical Center with head and possible internal injuries.

Two passengers -- 26-year-old Ian Abele of Duanesburg and 54-year-old Michael Smith of Lake George -- were also taken to Albany Med with head injuries.

Forty-year-old Janice Vunk of Duanesburg was taken to Saint Clare's hospital in Schenectady with a hand and hip injury, and 23-year-old Chris Fuller of Duanesburg was uninjured but taken to Saint Clare's as a precaution.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

Next time someone tries to be cute and asks why jump out of a perfectly good airplane, remember this.

There are no perfectly good airplanes. Only perfectly good parachutes. Never try to jump out of a perfectly good parachute.

Hmmm....not familiar with that DZ...must be a fairly small one. Hope everybody is ok and doesn't suffer any complications with their injuries.

Haha...I don't know if I would have issued a statement to the press so quickly, a DZO may not be a great "check airmen" or "attorney".

Speaking out of turn, only gives the law suit people and the feds more ammo.

It almost sounds as if the DZO is trying to cover for something....like maybe bad MX....but in any case, it was incredibly stupid for him to make ANY comments like that for the media.

Yea...it did seem like he was compensating.

I would be looking more at civil liability as opposed to what the feds would do. Feds will be looking at who was pilot in command...yadda yadda yadda. You know the delio.

Civily...in a lawsuit...we have a guy that admits his pilot was a little hinky and in the future he'll prevent hinky by flying more himself. WTF is that all about? It's like he said he knew this guy wasn't up to par...but...then...and so.

In civil cases...it's preponderance...and preponderance is 50.00000000000001% of of the law.
