11:22 p.m.
There were some tense moments early Friday evening as a commuter plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Jackson's McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport. Initial reports indicated Pinnacle Airlines flight 2676, with 27 passengers on board was enroute from Nashville to Memphis.
According to reports, around 6:45 p.m., emergency crews were dispatched to the airport after receiving reports that the plane was possibly filled with smoke after the automatic extinguisher sensors activated. Minutes later, the CRJ 200 jet landed safely with no injuries to the passengers or crew.
"They [the passengers] deplaned with no incidents here," said Marty Clements, director for the Jackson-Madison County Emergency Management Agency." The fire department from Madison County and from the City of Jackson responded. There was four engine companies here from the city. They went on to do an inspection and found no damage or any alarms. We deplaned the passengers and got them out of there and secure."
It is not clear what caused the extinguisher sensors to activate. The jet was allowed to continue on to Memphis and, according to the FAA, took off from the airport around 10:15 p.m. Arrangements were being made to either allow the passengers to continue their flight or to be taken by bus to Memphis.
