I know this has been gone over and over on this board, but I need to know how many cap. upgrades are they expecting over the next 6 months and if the airplanes coming are firm or could they go somewhere else? My job is gone on April 1 and I need to figure out how to pay the bills. I have the time to upgrade there just want to make sure I could slide into a cap. spot... Thanks

The jets are firm up to 139 but no expectations/guarantees past that. Apparently there was another vacancy with 30 more captains released the other day although I haven't personally seen it. I haven't sat down and done the math but I would think that we'd be getting fairly close to having enough Captains. If you came to Pinnacle in April the soonest you would hold a CA seat would be effective 1 July or so (with upgrade training to start about 1 to 2 months before that) just because of the way the vacancy posting system here works. On that latest vacancy award that becomes effective 1 April, 6 of the 35 Captain vacancies went to FO's with a seniority number of 500 or less - I think you'll prbably see more of that on the next few awards. Remember - there are many FO's here that have the senority and time to upgrade but haven't because of various reasons - alot of it depends on how many of these guys take it before the deliveries stop.

Point being - if you have any intentions of coming to Pinnacle you need to interview soon - things happen slow here. It's not uncommon to go 2 months or more between interview and Day 1 of class. If you come here soon chances are decent you would get a Captain seat, if you wait until mid April before you interview then chances aren't so great - either way don't come to Pinnacle thinking you're going to "slide" into a Captain seat - I think we're approaching the point of having enough Captains but I'm an idiot so don't listen to what I say - find a more informed source.

PS - I assume you're at Indy - it's great that you have experience in the CRJ but that's only half the battle - unless you're already a Captain there walking into a CA seat here would be extremely difficult - I've been at 2 other airlines and things at Pinnacle are just "different". You need some time - even if it's only a few months in the right seat - to learn things here.

Thanks for the help. Ya I work for Indy. About half way up the list and never thought I would get cut... But this is a difficult choice to make. Pros and Cons for every airline out there..

Upgrades

I'm in training at Pinnacle right now and 5 guys in my class got Street Captain,2 guys in the class ahead of me got it as well, but who knows what will happen in the future? I can say that they were not guaranteed Captain from the Get go, they just got lucky, but I can say that I don't envy the stress and all the extra studies they have to do, but if you've already got CRJ time, then it should be easier for you. Good luck, they're hiring like crazy right now and out of all the other regionals, this one is kicking business wise!! I feel fortunate to be here for sure.

Mtnjam, welcome to 9E. If you have the time while you are studying profiles and limitations please tell me where we are "kicking business wise". I've been at 9E for 2 1/2 years and have never seen this place so screwed up. Our VP-Flt Ops was just booted out the door, SOC has been in meltdown since the ice storm in MEM just before Christmas and I have only had about 5 on time departures in 5 or 6 weeks of flying. The only thing I can see getting kicked is our own a$$.............

BTW, if you're headed to DTW or MSP after IOE, study up on the de-ice procedures! Good luck and welcome to a great group.

Reserve

Just to give you some more info.

I am going to CA school on the 31st. My seniority number is in the mid six hundreds and I've been at 9e for a year and 2 months. There have been several street captain spots available/awarded. But, something to consider is time on Reserve.

While there are a couple of guys/gals that are junior to me that have already been through/are about to start CA training I plan to be on reserve for a LONG TIME. If your coming in off the street be prepared for this. I happen to live in my domicile and I was lucky enough to be awarded a slot at home so its not the end of the world. That is as long as airport (Ready) reserve doesnt come back.

Hope this info helps. If I can be of any further help feel free to I-M me.

If you want to see screwed up dial the 9E clock back about 6-7 years. This airline is a dream boat compared to back then.

Not yet.

We are taking delivery of approximately 5 aircraft per month through June or July (depends on how fast they can crank them out). The company seems to be moving more towards a 5 crew per aircraft staffing ratio, so figure 25 CA per month at a minimum needed (which closely follows the vacancies) plus possibly a few more after the "Christmas Melt-Down of '04" to cover their existing understaffing (there are only 7 freakin' reserve lines in MSP for Feb - you guys are going to be flying your tail of).

The last vacancy only covered to April 1st, so we need CA's for May, June, and July. If I know DW (and after 3 1/2 years of filing grievances, I'm pretty sure I do), May and June will be 25-30 CA vacancies, so 50-60 there, plus a smaller vacancy (10 to 12) for July followed by 2 or 3 months of no vacancies, then a final "sort" vacancy to fill whatever is needed (get ready for July, August, and September to be REALLY short-staffed).

That means somewhere between 60 and 75 more CA slots to be awarded BEFORE the "adjustment" bid.

Remember - there are many FO's here that have the senority and time to upgrade but haven't because of various reasons - alot of it depends on how many of these guys take it before the deliveries stop.
That's "The REST of The Story". After talking to some people down on "NonCaring", there are NOT that many qualified F/O's left; most have taken the upgrade a few at a time on the last three vacancies (those 5 or 6 on each vacancy with -500 seniority numbers).

Add to that some of the F/O's don't WANT to upgrade AT ALL (wives with large primary incomes, kids at home they want to see, holding 16-18 days off depending on domicile, or they have their own business), and I'm betting we don't have a big "run" on high seniority upgrades. I originally though we would, but I'm beginning to realize there just aren't that many guys.

Point being - if you have any intentions of coming to Pinnacle you need to interview soon... If you come here soon chances are decent you would get a Captain seat, if you wait until mid April before you interview then chances aren't so great...
That's more than true. Put your resume in NOW. Call Kim Monroe once a week and leave a polite and SHORT message about how great it would be to be with a growing, financially stable, FUN company (blowing a little sunshine on someone's backside never hurts), not to mention how QUICK you can take an interview / be in class ("Whenever, wherever, just tell me and I'LL BE THERE!"). If you can get here quickly you run a VERY good chance of getting a CA upgrade while in class.

The company is saying "No street Captains" because they don't believe that a person upgraded during initial is a "street Captain". Next vacancy might make them change their tune...

it's great that you have experience in the CRJ but that's only half the battle - unless you're already a Captain there walking into a CA seat here would be extremely difficult
No it's not. Lots of guys with previous 121 jet experience had no problem. It's more about attitude and dumping whatever you learned at "your previous airline" and just doing it their way. Cooperate and you WILL graduate, especially if they like you (despite what they say, it IS a popularity contest.

WARNING!! SPECULATION AHEAD
If FlyI sends back a bunch of CRJ's they have leased, it will present a hard-to-resist opportunity for NWA to pick up some leases EXTREMELY CHEAPLY and EXTREMELY QUICKLY.

Because of this, I predict another 10 to 20 CRJ's on property announced shortly before we take our last one. Please note, these are NOT part of the additional aircraft options NWA has exercised with Bombardier, I have no clue where those will go, I just believe Northwest will take advantage of the opportunity if it presents itself in a financially useful way.

Just my .02 cents (which doesn't even buy you a cup of potable water coffee). :)
