Why don't we see more pilots in Management?

For those that do move over to Management -- do you still get to retain your seniority and be a part of the union -- or do you get paid as a manager then?

You are out of the union once you move over to the dark side. You retain your senority though. And you do get paid as a manager.

Most pilots that have moved over to management, at least around here (QX) had to subscribe to management's policy of screwing over the pilots or you won't last very long. One chick just got a ACP slot and she had to kiss the Seinor VP or OPS a$$ for two years being his servant performing odd jobs in ops before she was allowed to hold that post.

The dark side

I remember the vice president saying after I became chief pilot "you'll see things differently now that you're on this side of the fence". Thankfully I was only there another 2 months before I left. Like the previous post said you lose the protection of the union. It's a tough spot because you're supposed to be for the pilots, but management has an axe over your head. Thank goodness I left before I got fired. The pay was good though.

One thing for sure, most that make the transition find out that the perspective they had changes. A very tough skin is a preerequisite for all the pilots that you were buddies with suddenly find you not as quick to agree with their limited view of how the organization works. Contrary to the view of some, you are not ingrainded with some screw the pilots attitude or suddenly become hard hearted. This whole change is what those that tried to create airlines found so difficult. They had seen everything merely though the myopic view of flying the plane. Management is about many things, flying hte plane not so much one of them.

The history of pilot managed airlines it not a pretty picture. What was the name of the last one where you brought $50K worth of stock to get a job?

Our Director of Flight Ops might have been Ok as a line pilot, I dunno, but he's turned into a real tool.

He now refers to us as "stinking employees".

One of his memos had this to say about sick leave....if you abuse sick leave we’ll use all the means available to track you down and employ the process of progressive discipline.

Track us down ?

Great guy, huh ?
