I have decided to get this old body of mine into shape a take up weight lifting. I know there are alot of pilots who are health nuts and I need suggestions on nutritional supplements.

The guys at the health store want to sell me the most expensive powders and pills and I just don't feel I am getting a straight answer from them.

I also have heard horror stories about guys getting positive results on drug tests and want to stay away from that. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Buzz

If you are working out at a gym, ask around and find out what the lean guys are consuming and what the big guys are consuming. These people will have some tips on saving money and what is currently in/safe/works. They will also be good advisors as to the amount of reps and sets you should be doing for particular muscle groups.

If you are working out at home...you will not have this information sharing unless you go to a weight building forum.

I only used some of the protien supplements years ago, when I used to weight train religiously. Couldn't tell you what's in vouge now....but those guys in the gym that you work out with, should be glad to talk to you about what's what.

I would first come up with a low carb diet, then come up with a workout routine that will be tailored around your flight schedule. It is not "all" about the "heavy" weights and lifting that is going to get you into "shape" as some of us like to call it. It is ALL about eating and a solid diet..... - You can workout until you get blue in the face but without a proper diet it will mean nothing at all.. Go to GNC or a health food store (even online which is cheaper) and purchase either METrx or Myoplex which will help you achieve lean muscle mass in a given amount of time. Any other products that you get I would highly suggest those manufactured by EAS. Incorporating 30+ minutes of cardio per workout or every other workout is also key since this will get you the desired effects.

Stay away (far away) from any products that have Mahuang (sp?) extract in it since it speeds the heart rate up drastically and it has been linked to many problems. Ripped Fuel is a "famous" one that had this in it..

good luck

How about you forget the diet and exercise. Eat what you want, and either take up wrestling grizzly bears, or have a lot of sex (but not with bears. There are laws, and it spoils them for cockpit use).

And the scratches on your back sting for about a year...

I imagine you want stuff that will help develop muscle, based on your thread. I'll admit, other then knowing protein is a good aid in muscle build up, I don't know much about getting “buff.” As for getting healthy/in-shape I have a few suggestions. First I suggest taking some Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)--A really superb blend is some stuff called Udo's Choice. My Pops is a licensed pharmacist. Also he is a chemist, and now works for a vitamin company. When I asked him to research the Udo's, he said it looked to be very good stuff. I have lost around 15lbs+ since taking the Udo's (about 6 weeks now.) I don't credit Udo's for all this, but no doubt it has given me more energy and helped in lowering my total body fat amount. The real advantage is the long term benefits that any EFA's offer. On top of the Udo’s, a good exercise program is important. If you can do it, I recommend 100 sit-ups (or leg lifts) and 20 pushups to start the day off. Take the EFA's first thing in the morning, along with some wheat grass (juice) and possibly a protein shake. I also use another blend of an Udo's product called Udo's fast food. It is basically a very low calorie powder that can serve as a meal replacement. Eat a light lunch of mostly protein and make sure any carbs are from fruit. Also lunch time is when I take another hit of the Udo’s. No soda just unsweetened iced tea or water. For dinner a very high protein meal such as chicken or fish. Any meats you get (chicken or beef), spend the few cents extra and get the free range (no antibiotics or steroids) type. They sell these at Publix or major health food markets (such as Whole Foods.) End the day with another round of 100 sit-ups and 20 pushups and a final dose of Udo’s. Try to go for a good run (or the equivalent) at least once a week. I think if you could do all this and maintain it for your life you would see little if any colds and totally avoid a lot of the major diseases out there. Sure it is alright to splurge once in a while, but the important thing is keeping it in balance. Try to get off the caffeine (teas are okay but coffee is bad.) Green tea and sashimi are great for a healthy diet. Another important thing to take is Vit C. I take about 2000-3000+ mg (I think it is mg) a day. A good B-complex wouldn't hurt either. If you are not careful, you can definitely get carried away with the health products. You may be tempted to think I have gotten carried away. And maybe I did fall victim to good marketing, but for the most part I did research the products I take and have had the advice of my dad as well as family friends to give the yea/nay on a product. I hope you are able to find a good diet that works well for you. It feels so great to be healthy. Oh and one last thing that has been very important to my health, is a good 8 hours of sleep.
Good night!

here is a link for Udo's.

My favorite

I happen to stray toward the world famous Beer diet. The diet is very strict, but not really hard to follow.

The gist of the diet is this. Cheap beer fills your stomach up and leaves no room for food. The more cheap beer you drink, the less food you eat.

Good luck!!!:D

flopping at hotels

I've found it helpful to get on the treadmill at xyz hotel you end up at 1 hr after dinner or so. Get involved in a 1.5 hour movie on HBO and you'll forget you're on the treadmill and not feel like a slobby lazy pilot like we usually do.

Don't try to hide the fact that you really are down there in your new Club Monaco sweats watching "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" while jogging on the mill big boy;)

I'll be down at the bar doing 12 to 24 oz curls while I still have the metabolism for it!!!!

High Protein Low Carb Meals, not NO carb. Drink about 2 protein shakes a day, not the meal replacement shakes. I personally like www.MAXMUSCLE.com

The MAX Pro tastes o.k. but mixes very easily without a blender and is not that messy. Mixing easy without a blender is important when your on the road. All you have to do is carry it around in some kind of thermos and add water when its time for your shake. I would stay away from andro or creatine. Creatine made me strong as sheet but I had terrible cramping.

Drink LOTS of water over the course of the day, at least a gallon. Cut out most sodas even diet. I try to eat my last meal of the day no later than 7pm. This doesnt always happen though. For a while I was eating no later than 6pm and was very strict about it and I managed to cut about 6lbs in a month.

Lift and do cardio, both are very important.

my opinion....

take a good multi vitamin without excessive levels of vitamins that will only be peed out . Then buy whey protein from Trader Joes $8.99 a can and use that to supplement your diet pre and post exercise workouts .No need to get that $39.99 protein crap . My key to losing 25 lbs and building muscle was eating 5 small meals a day and reducing cheese intake . Stock up on nonfat yogurt , cottage cheese and Turkey . Eating egg whites with some tabasco as a flavor enhnacer makes a good breakfast.. Toss in Rye bread with a treat of jelly . Rye bread is the least fattening bread available . You want to stay away from enriched flour . In addition hitting the gym 4 days a week . No joke but an active sex life works wonders for those six pack abdominals .I do abs every day of the week .

As you see your body changing form you will only be encouraged to work harder at getting where you want to be. Good luck Vavso

Agree with the others that diet is where its at...

- Skip restaurants if at all possible, aside from tasty salads with dressing on the side (ceasars are wallowing in fat, discusting)

- Eliminate excess sugar (donuts, SODA, which is absolute crap)

- Enjoy awesome feasts of pasta, steak, and whatever else you want.. but watch how its prepared. Don't buy ground beef with more than 5% fat. Always trim ALL the fat/skin off anything you BBQ. Don't make your pasta alfredo (tasty, but full of fat sauce).

- Anytime you cook anything, cut down the oil/sugar in the recipe by 30-50%

- Consume whole grains rather than white flour whenever possible.

- Switch from your evening beer to a glass of wine with dinner. I used to like beer.... anymore I don't really enjoy it, so this has been easy for me.

- After you are eating right, the energy to work out more magically appears. I, personally, can't stand the gym and will avoid it at all costs... instead I try to do some cardio exercise which also builds strength on a daily basis - for me that is cycling (every day, to work and back, and around town), and surfing... both build the muscle and keep your heart rate up (assuming you're paddling for waves...)

Really the above isn't that hard, and it tastes pretty darn good. After several weeks of eating "good", I find that fatty things taste oily and disgusting (which they are). I consider myself really lucky to have a health-concious woman in my life who loves to cook delicious things that are also really healthy.

Anyways, that is what works for me.

I lost over 40 pounds since January doing the following:

Cut out fried food.
Cut out fast food.
Cut out bread.
I also began exercising. Both cardio and weight training.
Most of my weight loss came before the exercise though.
Best of luck.

Thanks Avbug,

wrestled my first grizzly bear this morning after having sex 4 times (though not with the bear).

On my way to Waffle House for a double helping of everything.

PS: Anyone know how to reattach an arm?

Getting the grizzly in a head-lock isn't too bad just a few calories, but the bad breath............UGHHHHHHHHHHHH<>.
