Great quote:

" FedEx pays an Airbus A380 captain with 10 years of experience $17,464 a month, according to WillFlyForFood.cc, a Web site that compares pilot pay."

$3,000 a month for a 10 year jet captain?! Not quite. That's about what a 10 year guy takes home every 2 weeks after taxes, deductions, etc. The media can't get anything right.

It is all part of the 2007-hiring boom. World wide pilot shortage starts to spread to the US, just a predicted by the AW&ST about a year ago. Entry-level carriers have reduced their competitive hiring mins to Comm./MEL/Inst in order to fill classes. Cannot go any lower, the thing they will have to do is raise pay.

We all know that won't happen. If it does, it won't be much, and it won't last long. Then they'll be back to the business of gutting contracts when staffing is adequate.

I think that is where you are wrong, when they are unable to staff an airline(not enough applicants) the only way that they can attract more applicants is to make the pay better then the other guys pay.

Or they will begin to allow outsourcing/ownership by foreign countries. The US wasn't ready for foreign owned airlines this year, but the management will claim that they can not afford the high cost of US labor. Northwest Airlines began this already on international flights by outsourcing flight attendants, once they layover in a foreign country they go to a minimum number of US FA's and pay them much less.

Take a look at China, and I believe they are positioning to be a global force in the airline industry (among other things).

I would love to think that the shortage would indicate an increase in pay, but somehow mgt will sidestep that at any cost.
