OK, first time to get a medical here in Portland. Anyone know of a pilot friendly AME in or around the Portland area.

Years ago I would have told you to go to my dad, but he's dead now, so...

I just went across the river to Vancouver (Vantucky) for my most recent medical to a guy named Larry Foltz. Awesome physical and a really nice guy. Ex-Air Force Lt. Col. if I am not mistaken. Cute medical assistant. Does all classes of physicals. Easy physical and mostly just wants to shoot the sh!t with you and hangar fly, but will make sure you are healthy. I told him he's my new ME until he retires (he's pretty young-looking though). Hope this helps.

If you're on the south side Aurora Aviation has an AME tuesdays and thursdays (I think), who can be scheduled theough the FBO (so long, time zone proof office hours).

Just went to Foltz for the first time after seeing Dr. Braun for 8 years. He was a really nice guy and it went really quick. No coughing either. It was around $90.

I'll third the Foltz recomendation. I think it was $95.50 for a first class w/ no EKG. I went to Braun till he passed away. The only problem that I had with Braun was that he always seemed to be booked weeks in advance. I've been to Foltz twice, both times with only a few days notice.

Check out Trajen FBO @ PDX. Can't remember the doctors name, but does medicals in the lounge 1 day a week.

Do you mean at Flightcraft? If so, that was Guy Gorrell and he was awesome..did my physicals for a long time and a genuinely nice guy. But he finally retired, which was why I went to Foltz in the first place. But I'm glad I did.

The only problem with Foltz is that he will not bill your insurance company, which means you have to pay up front- then haggle with them (your insurer).

And the gal at the front desk will make it clear that she doesn't want you to ask about it again.

I really don't care about the bill or billing procedures....I just want a "PILOT FRIENDLY" AME.

Thanks guys....I am going to go to Foltz.

BTW...is this guy full time AME and do the QX guys use him?

I think he's a family practice D.O. who also does flight physicals. Not many docs could make a living if all they did was flight physicals.

If you're fat, he also has a very good medically-supervised weight loss program with a nutritionist, blood work, etc. etc. that is very successful (but expensive).

LOL, I like the fat part. We are all FAT and could go on a diet. I am mostly concerned with the eye exam and hearing exam. Does he stick you in a hearing booth? Hope not!!!! I went to one AME that uses a hearing booth and it scared me to death! I almost walked out of the medical in mid stream with the excuse of Expolsive Diareaha....hahahahaha....

I hate the hearing part also. Bah. Used to go to a guy locally and he did it all the time. But I understand if you 'failed' it you can just ask him to do the conversational test and as long as you pass that you are good. Either way I went somewhere else.

Foltz does not use a hearing booth, like most AME's, if you can hear a normal conversation, then you pass that part.
