MCALLEN, Texas, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- An autopsy was planned Sunday for a Continental Airlines pilot who collapsed at the controls and died on a jet headed from Houston to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
The Boeing 757 was diverted to McAllen, Texas, after the pilot fell ill Saturday, an airline spokesman told the Houston Chronicle.
"The co-pilot consulted with Continental's operations center and arrangements were made to divert the aircraft to McAllen and to be met by an ambulance," airline spokesman Dave Messing said in an e-mail. "Unfortunately, the ill pilot did not survive."
Lt. Paulo Herrera of the McAllen Fire Department told the newspaper the pilot apparently suffered a heart attack.
"We waited for the plane to taxi to the jetway, and then we went onboard the plane," Herrera said. "The pilot was on the floor by the door. They had done compressions, CPR on him onboard the aircraft."
The aircraft carrying 210 passengers resumed its flight early Saturday evening.
